Midrsv Posted July 1, 2010 #1 Posted July 1, 2010 I completed installing the PCW clutch upgrade kit last night and it went together very easily as others have stated. The clutch appears to be working and there is absolutely no slipping. However, I have a question about the friction zone. With the original spring it seemed that the clutch started grabbing when the lever was about 1/2 way out and there was 3/4 of an inch or so of friction zone. With the upgrade it seems that the friction zone is only about the last 1/4 inch of lever travel before the lever is free. It makes me wonder if the clutch is fully engaging. I still have about 1/4 inch of free travel in the lever after fully engaged. Is this consistent with other's experience? Dennis
gibvel Posted July 1, 2010 #2 Posted July 1, 2010 Dennis: I seem to remember others commenting on this as well. Some have said that if you don't replace the half plate that the friction point will remain like the stock bike.

I have that same issue with my PCW clutch but you will get used to it.. don't worry.. the friction zone is sooo narrow with this new clutch, but it grabs so well you will get used to it soon enough.. BOO Posted July 2, 2010 #4 Posted July 2, 2010 Dennis: I seem to remember others commenting on this as well. Some have said that if you don't replace the half plate that the friction point will remain like the stock bike. Actually on the one I did the friction point was the same with or without the half plate. Not sure why most of the people seem to have the friction as it was with the standard clutch but there are some that have it way out. As I stated in another thread mine started slipping again after about 10K miles so I completely replaced my clutch with OEM parts. The original clutch lasted for about 65K so hopefully the new will also. BOO
pegscraper Posted July 2, 2010 #5 Posted July 2, 2010 Is this consistent with other's experience? Dennis Yes, same here, and I'm just about to put my half plate back in. I don't like the reduced friction zone. I've been using it for over a year now and I'm still not used to it.
FreezyRider Posted July 2, 2010 #6 Posted July 2, 2010 Another reason that I personally believe the Barnett is the way to go....
Midrsv Posted July 14, 2010 Author #7 Posted July 14, 2010 Following up, I couldn't get used to the very narrow friction zone so I re-installed the 1/2 disc and wave washer with the heavier spring and all is well again. Dennis
Condor Posted July 14, 2010 #8 Posted July 14, 2010 Maybe running oil with Friction modifiers will take care of the problem.
Sylvester Posted July 14, 2010 #9 Posted July 14, 2010 (edited) Another reason that I personally believe the Barnett is the way to go.... I replaced the Barnett with the PCW and will not go back. I had the same tight release but everything broke in perfectly after some miles. I love the PCW clutch upgrade. Edited July 14, 2010 by Sylvester
