ediddy Posted June 24, 2010 Share #5 Posted June 24, 2010 Great pictures. Last year when I went to MD I saw several on the highway. I would wave but they would act like they didn't see me.

Yama Mama Posted June 24, 2010 Author Share #9 Posted June 24, 2010 I have heard they do not like to have their photos taken. I was trying not to be too obvious. It was just pretty I could not resist a photo or two. Yama Mama
dingy Posted June 25, 2010 Share #10 Posted June 25, 2010 (edited) There are a number of different sects of Amish in this area. The Swartzentruber sect is the most strict and they don't like pictures. They are in the Holmes County area. They even refuse to display a slow moving vehicle sign on their buggies due to the orange color. The more moderate ones don't mind as much. There is also a large Mennonite population in the area. Very similar to Amish in outward appearance, but less strict. I have seen Mennonites using gas powered mowers on their lawns. I had an Amish young man make a seat extender for the bike this spring when I moved backrest rearward 2". Good work and very cheap. Drreb Posted June 25, 2010 Share #11 Posted June 25, 2010 We have a Mennonite sect in Montezuma Ga. Very nice people and have a wonderful resturant there.
Sleeperhawks Mechanic Posted June 25, 2010 Share #12 Posted June 25, 2010 Great pictures! I love the serenity of Amish country. So less harried, stressful than the lives we lead.

Monty Posted June 25, 2010 Share #14 Posted June 25, 2010 We have lots of Mennonites around here too. They own several businesses. They used to only drive black vehicles, but they realized that repainting all of the cars black lowered their resale value, so they drive all different color vehicles now. Some of them have to move to other areas such as Ohio or Pennsylvania, as they do a lot of inbreeding, and they have to mix it up now and then, or they start having problems. Families will move around to keep "new blood" in the gene pool. They do drink alot too.
