Need help with computer

A few weeks ago the rogue syware that pops up and says your computer is infected and it is going to do a scan popped up on my computer. I finally got it off my computer but since then I keep getting advertisements popping up. Just now I was on this site and all of a sudden my computer screen went blank and and ad for free credit report came up. Also, something has hijacked my web browser. I use msn for my homepage but if I put in a search an entirely different site comes up. Anyone know how I can correct this? I am using Yahoo's virus scan, spybotscan, spynomore and bit defender. None of these pick up anything on my computer.

IF none of the usual scanners can find it and get rid of it, be ready to do a reformat or take it to a computer store. Any time you get a pop-up warning like that, close it immediately, and/or close the browser. DONT click on ANYTHING in the popup...not even a 'no, thanks' button.

You might consider doing a system restore to a period prior to the initial infestation.

Two things.

1) try running Opera or Firefox and see how they behave. If they're ok, dump and reload IE.

2) Check the add\remove programs routine. See if There's something there that doesn't belong.

Oh - and check sysedit and see if there's something under the startup tab that seems odd.

If you have no real particular reason to run Windows, dump it and try PCLinuxOS.

No virus, no spy ware, no problems.

spybot and malwarebytes are good finding junk, trick is to update both , shut down and restart in safe mode, [hit f8 while restarting and pick safe mode] then run them one at a time to get rid of junk.

Two other utilities that I run that keep my PC's free of this stuff are CrapCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com, and AVG Anti-Virus (free version) http://www.avg.com. I update both at least every other week, and they really have made a difference in my PC performance.

You may have a Zlob Trojan. One of my people got one similar to what you describe a year or so back.

All the obvious stuff (named here) did nothing. She had Norton AV as the primary AV and their "help-LOL" desk said to pony up $99 dollars to continue talking. Nope.

Not sure where they draw the line on HELP, but it was below this nasty one.

 

After a lot of googling, I came across Smithfraud Fix. It is a freeware that DID IT!

Google for it, read up, see if you want to try it. Also look up Zlob to see if you might have it.

 

Now, it did clean it up,,,, but the later, every time she booted, it nagged to buy a pro copy or something like that. So, after a week I simply went to Add/Remove and removed the Smithfraudfix program. PC has been fine since.

 

Disk format and data loss was not needed. But as I was at a last straw before Format, it was worth taking a chance.

Oh, yeah, while on the Internet, the user did get a popup that said the computer was infected. Said to click OK and the Popup said it would fix it,,,,,, boy did it! If you see that,,, bail out.

Either do ALT-CTL-DEL then kill the task or just hit the power button for 5 full seconds.

She got the virus by clicking OK,,, invited the devil in.

The first two usually get rid of it all, but NO ONE program gets rid of everything. You need to use a couple of them. These are the only ones I trust. Most of the others are actually spyware in disguise.

Thanks for the replies. I forgot to mention in my original post that I also have avast anti-virus on my computer. We have a network here at the office and I use a notebook with a replicator so I can hook to the network here or take my notebook home and use as a stand alone. We have a firewall and avast commercial version anti virus and I also use ccleaner in addition to the other programs I mentioned. I even did a retore back to June 6, the day before the rogue malware popped up. All of the programs I run show no problems but there is something that is causing the pop up advertisements. Before running some of these programs 207.net tracking cookie kept showing up. I would remove it but it would reload itself. I finally got if off and now no tracking cookines show up. I wish I could use an internet browser other than IE but I can't because the other browsers won't work with the insurance companies I do business with daily. I tried google chrome and it worked with some of the companies but not all. I just wish I could find the people that develop these programs that cause computer problems and be left in a room with just me and them in the room.

You guys should check out Vipre. Made by Sunbeltsoftware. Its working real good for us. I dropped Trendmicro for them at 1/4 the cost. Its catching things even Trend didn't catch and the machines are not nearly as slow.

I hope someone figures this out it hit me about two weeks ago, I have used superantispyware and avasti, which removed alot of stuff but my computer stills is acting up and cannot find it's IP address sometime. I am ready to shoot that thing!

I use Superantispyware, and CrapCleaner, and antimalwarebytes, to try and keep the computer clean. 2 months ago I got a new one that kept coming back. I had to reinstall the OS. Most of my stuff was allready backed up. Its good to do a clean install, every once in a while. To keep windows snappy. Make sure IE is up to date also, run the newest one. It has better protection. Fire Fox is good also. I know how to cleanup a computer, and it was beyond me. I found a walkthru of a registry fix. But thats way heavy. Reinstall is a pain, but in the long run. It's faster and your clean, again. Good luck.

I hit the button to abort and the fake malware popped up stating my computer was infected and it was going to scan. I hit control alt del and got a meesage that my task manager had been disabled so I couldn't do that. I finally got rid of the malware and my task manager is working again.

Hey SylWoody,

SpyNoMore was the program that got rid of Zlob. I had to pay $29.95 for the program but I was desperate to get rid of the program I paid for it. I did a google search for Zlob and there were a few programs that it said would get rid of Zlob and SpyNoMore was one of them. It even said that Zlob would disable your task manager, which it did.
