ToyOdie Posted June 17, 2010 #1 Posted June 17, 2010 This is the first bike that I've owned that has a heal toe shifter. I have been riding it using just the toe but trying the heal every once in a while. It's very uncomfortable because the heal is so high when the toe is where is like it. I removed the inside belcrank and lowered the heal and it was better for up shifting. The toe was then to high to be comfortable. I started looking at other bikes (mainly HD) and most of their shifters are 2 piece with a spline that allows both the heal and toe to be adjusted separately. Does anyone make a shifter that is more adjustable or flatter than the stock heal toe? I’ve read other posts about cutting off the heal and that is not an option I want to take.
Flyinfool Posted June 17, 2010 #2 Posted June 17, 2010 You could always cut it off and have it welded back on where you want it.
Mariner Fan Posted June 17, 2010 #3 Posted June 17, 2010 Or, you could just not use it. I only use mine to shift into neutral from first.
naturbar Posted June 17, 2010 #4 Posted June 17, 2010 i rode my RSTD for a year befor ei even tried the heel shifter...at first i did not like it and also found it seems high to lift heel to reach but after time i will not go back to just the toe shifter----i say give it a little time.
eagleeye Posted June 17, 2010 #5 Posted June 17, 2010 I agree, give it a little time. I felt the same way when i got my RSTD. Swore I'd never use that thing. Now, use it all the time. Steve
Guest oldroadstar Posted June 17, 2010 #6 Posted June 17, 2010 I never use mine and it gets hung up on my pants cuff sometimes. I will be cutting it off soon.
bobbyduck Posted June 17, 2010 #7 Posted June 17, 2010 I have short legs so I was constantly hitting the heel end when I put my foot up on the board. I removed it and went with the billet Yamaha accessory item that only has the toe shifter. Works for me!
Condor Posted June 17, 2010 #9 Posted June 17, 2010 I've been working on getting used to the HT. It's starting to feel more comfortable, but the problem I'm having is the heel position is so high that my heel is not letting the throw come completely back up unless I make a conscious effort to raise the heel of my boot. Lowering the heel position will put the toe higher than a kite. I wish they did have an adjustable heel/toe angle like those on the Harley...
Shipper Posted June 17, 2010 #10 Posted June 17, 2010 I used to use both the toe and heel shifter, but when I got my RSTD neither one was comfortable so I adjusted the toe to be comfortable. The heel is now too high to be used, but I don't think I'll ever go back to using the heel anyway.
ToyOdie Posted June 18, 2010 Author #11 Posted June 18, 2010 Thanks guy's It sounds like most of you have the same issue with the HT. I adjusted it back to make the toe comfortable. Unless I decide to have it cut and rewelded I'll more than likey leave it that way. I do like the heal when it's lower but I can't live with the toe so high.
Dave77459 Posted June 18, 2010 #12 Posted June 18, 2010 I wear heavy box-toe boots, and could not get comfortable with my toe under there. When I wear lighter shoes, the shifter seems too high. So I started heel shifting and it works well for me. I guess I don't notice lifting my foot; I shift my feet around anyways. And maybe it's a heavy guy thing, but I am a lot stronger pushing down with my whole leg than pulling up with my toe/ankle. *shrug* Glad you found something that works for you. Dave
Leland Posted June 18, 2010 #13 Posted June 18, 2010 This is what I did (if this link works). http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showpost.php?p=412083&postcount=32
Sailor Posted June 18, 2010 #14 Posted June 18, 2010 I had trouble with the heel/toe shifter at first (toe down/heel high) but now that I am used to it I really like it.
Oldslow Posted June 19, 2010 #15 Posted June 19, 2010 I'm about to cut mine off. What stops it from rusting in the cut away area?
Oldslow Posted June 19, 2010 #17 Posted June 19, 2010 Try it you will like it. The Heel/Toe that is. Actually on long Drives I sometimes put my feet way back under me. The heel/toe thingy gets in my way! Cut it off my Nomad and never looked back!
sadicarnot Posted June 19, 2010 #18 Posted June 19, 2010 Does anyone know if this will work on an '09 Royal Star Tour Deluxe; it is part # STR-1D738-10-00. It is a Billet Single Arm Shift Lever for a Roadliner. Yamaha sells it as a chrome accessory.
Condor Posted June 19, 2010 #19 Posted June 19, 2010 Does anyone know if this will work on an '09 Royal Star Tour Deluxe; it is part # STR-1D738-10-00. It is a Billet Single Arm Shift Lever for a Roadliner. Yamaha sells it as a chrome accessory. Looks really nice, but I think you'll need to add the ball attachment for the linkage hook up like on a heel/toe. While we're on the subject....maybe?.... Yamaha had a toe shift for the RSV, but it's been discontinued. If anyone is lucky enough to have one, could you measure the length from the pivot to the pin, center to center. I'm wondering if there is a difference in the length from the toe section of the heel/toe which is 6.5"
pegscraper Posted June 20, 2010 #20 Posted June 20, 2010 I'm about to cut mine off. What stops it from rusting in the cut away area? A little paint will keep it from rusting. I cut mine off three years ago.
CaptainJoe Posted June 21, 2010 #21 Posted June 21, 2010 I've used mine once in the 6 months I've owned my bike. Dosen't bother me one way or the other. Leave it alone or unbolt it and put back when you sell your bike.. Best to keep as origional as possible.
Paul Cleveland Posted July 18, 2010 #22 Posted July 18, 2010 Mine is cut off. Like to be able to move my foot back and forth. Rust bullet will keep anything from rusting and provides a super hard coating. Can paint it over surface rust. (Distributed by Summit racing) Later.
cb1313 Posted July 18, 2010 #23 Posted July 18, 2010 I use it to let me know where to rest my boot. The last bike I had with a rear shifter was a 1966 Honda 305 Scrambler' Cb
Bummer Posted July 18, 2010 #24 Posted July 18, 2010 Lest it appear that everyone is unhappy with the heel/toe shifter: I use mine all the time. I haven't stuck my toe under the shifter to pull up since I moved from a First Gen to a Second. In fact, I found it more difficult getting used to the position of the foot boards. I'm very happy with it just the way it is.
Yammy Posted August 4, 2010 #25 Posted August 4, 2010 I'm about to cut mine off. What stops it from rusting in the cut away area? try your wife's clear nail polish
