Denden Posted October 21, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 21, 2007 Google has implemented a new feature which enables you to type a telephone number into the search bar and hit enter and you will be given the person's name and address. If you then hit MapQuest, you will get a map to the person's house. Everyone should be aware of this! It's a nationwide reverse telephone book. If a child gives out his/her phone number, someone can now look it up to find out where he/she lives. The safety issues are obvious, and alarming. Note that you can have your phone number removed or blocked. I tried my number and it cam e up along with the mapquest and directions straight to our house. I did fill out the removal form for myself, and encourage all of you to do the same. Quite scary. Please look up your own number. In order to test whether your phone number is mapped, go to: google (http://www.google.com/) Type your phone number in the search bar (i.e. 555-555-1212) and hit enter. If you want to BLOCK Google from divulging your private information, simply click on your telephone number and then click on the Removal Form. Removal takes 48-hours. Check your own number and although this may not apply to you if you have an unlisted number or cell phone as primary contact, but you may know someone who needs to know this. Please share this information with friends and family.
Mariner Fan Posted October 21, 2007 Share #2 Posted October 21, 2007 I remember this warning about a year or so ago. It doesn't pick up my phone number and it's listed in the phone book. I guess I have to wonder what the big deal is. I don't care if someone knows where I live. Of course, that's just me. A single gal wouldn't want some perv. finding her address. FozzyUSN Posted October 22, 2007 Share #5 Posted October 22, 2007 Thanks for the warning. I looked my number up and it was correct right down to the front door. Were I single, I would not mind, but I am a single parent for the moment and want to protect my son as much as possible. Thanks for the warning!!! Gray Ghost Posted October 22, 2007 Share #6 Posted October 22, 2007 About the only way you are going to keep your address from being found on the internet is to get an unlisted phone number and move from the last address you had with a publicly listed phone. I just tried the same thing on whowhere.com and using the search by name found addresses on me going back over 20 years. The whowhere page also had maps as an option when searching for me by my phone number.
Kurt Posted October 22, 2007 Share #7 Posted October 22, 2007 Google is not the only site. I use a site that will not only tell me where you live, it will also give me your neighbors with phone numbers and addresses. I had a non-paying ebay buyer that tripped my trigger and I searched the internet and found he was a Gulf War Vet and where he lived, and his neighbors. Lots of info out there if you want to search. Of course in my town you can approach it the old way and ask. If you stopped at the local pub or gas station you could find lots of people. Be wary.
