My wife and I also shopped Walmart. We started with an 8X7.5. We had room for our double mattress but that was it. We moved up to a Northwest Territory Nordic Dome which is 10x8. It has room for our double air mattress and room to stand up and dress. It is light weight and cost was I think$49.00. We have slept in it in a rain storm and had no water inside.

Consider a Camping hammock. I have been off the ground for years and have no back trouble from sleeping on the ground. Packs small and light.

I am not talking about one of those string type. I am talking about a true camping hammock with rain fly. I make my own for less than $40.00.

If you want to see a few of the more expensive versions, visit the links below. At least it will give you a few ideas.

Take the easily packable one of these as you will probably not find anything that packs smaller:

To an inexpensive (waterproof) place like this:

and that is what I would call camping ;)

Seriously, that is what I call camping.

I have a Eureka 4-person Timberline tent that I have used for over 30 years now. It's easy to set up, is lightweight, packs small, and has always kept me dry. Just another option to consider...

I've been camping on and off for 57 years in a lot of different tents, the cheap ones work pretty good if ya don't mind getting wet once in a while, but after seeing Eagleeye's Coleman Holligan 3, I had to have one. I love it, there's no chance of rain getting in. I bought it on-line from a place in MI. Prices ran from $157 to $69. Now if you want one or more of them under $30 tents you can have one of my old ones.

Oh ya I always spray mine with waterproofing.
