Dyson DC24, lightweight, I have arthritus in my hands and it easy 4 me to use. We had one of the monster Kirbys for years. Dyson is by far a more enjoyable and in m/o the best cleaning vac out there. Wish the cord was a bit longer. When you 1st use it you will want to vac everything just to see what it will pick up! I suggest doing your mattress if you have had it for awhile, you will be surprised in a bad way, but you will beglad you did! Dyson all the way......

My wife bought a Kirby before I met her... Now that she's brewin' the baby, I can't have her lugging around that beast, (even though it has assisted drive) which is fine with me, she hates it... Always complaining about how it doesn't pick anything up, so I started doing the vacuuming.

 

Sure enough, the thing doesn't do jack squat! So I took it apart, cleaned the 2.5lbs of hair off the roller, cleaned the melted rubber off the drive shaft, roughed up the friction area on the roller, and replaced the belt... HOLY CRAP! This thing works now!

 

I spent the next 20 minutes trying to figure out how to get the area rug unstuck from it... It was in there pretty good!

Thanks for all the input ya'll ... looks like we're going with the Hoover model I mentioned above. I found it locally on sale for $399.98 (why can't they just make it $400 and quit with the b/s pricing that doesn't fool anyone) so we get a comparative vac to the Dyson, same/similar features, a bit longer warranty, more attachments, etc for $200 less expense. Considering where we're buying it (Home Depot), if we find we're not satisfied within 30 days, we can return it.

 

Granted, it's not a Dyson but "wok the heck"! There's just the 2 of us (mostly), not much carpeting, no pets .... it doesn't get a lot of heavy use... should last us the rest of our life (considering our age, that doesn't sound so good any more LOL)

Before buying any vac make sure it doesn't take one of those hepa filters. And if it does find out what the price of the replacement is.... Or maybe someone has already mentioned this... ??

Most of these type of vac's are lifetime filters. This one has a hepa lifetime plus another filter which is lifetime. I remember years ago I had an hepa air filter unit ... it wasn't a lifetime filter... danged filter was almost as much as the whole unit so I eventually trashed it. Like my laser printer at home... printer cost me $129 but the toner cartridge is $93 .... makes no sense!
