SilvrT Posted June 7, 2010 Share #1 Posted June 7, 2010 OK, OK .. I know this ain't about motorcycles but where else can a guy get the greatest feedback about almost every topic under the sun? Nina's Kenmore cannister vac c/w powehead finally packed it in after (according to her) 35 years of use!!! Imagine that... only 35 years! Anyhoo, we're looking to buy a new vacuum and are contemplating a Dyson upright model DC 14 or DC 25. Been reading good stuff about these but the price tag is a little hard to swallow. Anyone got any alternate suggestions/recommendations -or- do you have a Dyson and what's your review on it? Tks for your feedback.
GAWildKat Posted June 7, 2010 Share #2 Posted June 7, 2010 My parents swore on the old electrolux vacs...the company that originally made them has since changed names. Here's their website.... http://www.aerushome.com/
Monty Posted June 7, 2010 Share #3 Posted June 7, 2010 Laminate flooring is the way to go...then just use a swiffer.
SilvrT Posted June 7, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted June 7, 2010 Laminate flooring is the way to go...then just use a swiffer. We have hardwood throughout the house. We use area rugs in a few places. The stairs from the foyer to the main floor are carpeted and we have an area rug in the foyer. A swiffer would be handy from time to time but at least twice a month we like to do a thorough vacuuming. A good vacuum is the only way to get a lot of the crap that gets into the cracks and corners, into the area rugs, into the furniture, into the heating vents, etc.
Carbon_One Posted June 7, 2010 Share #5 Posted June 7, 2010 We've had a Dyson upright (model?) a number of years now. Great unit and really picks up stuff our old Hoover would leave behind. I like that there's no bags to buy for it. After 3-4 times it gets emptied we rinse the canister out and it's good as new. Larry

slick97spirit Posted June 7, 2010 Share #8 Posted June 7, 2010 In my opinion you can't go wrong with the Dyson. Mine is not the roller ball model, but I think that's overkill anyway. The standard model is a very well engineered machine. If it gets stopped up, there are all kinds of ways to unstop it without the use of tools. Best vacuum I've ever owned and waaaay cheaper and lighter than those dang Kirby's.

Good machines but hard to sell, especially back in "that day" .... price was crazy.
Sylvester Posted June 7, 2010 Share #10 Posted June 7, 2010 The Kirby will suck up a bolling ball, but we now have a Dyson. Cheaper and easier to tote up the stairs.
slick97spirit Posted June 7, 2010 Share #11 Posted June 7, 2010 I agree the Kirby's are great machines as well (if your a body builder) but that dang price is crazy and always has been. They're way to proud of em.
curtis Posted June 7, 2010 Share #12 Posted June 7, 2010 Last year I bought the wife a new Dyson DC25 animal model. It is the best vacuum that we have owned. It will pick up twice what everything else will and easy to carry and push. Ours has the animal attachment which is not needed unless you have pets. Then it is really nice or if you have a lot of step that is what I like to use it for hand held wand works great on the steps. Ours has a ball on it and I love the ball makes it seem easy to turn. However if you go with any of the model I don't think you will be disappointed. OK, OK .. CdnDave77 Posted June 8, 2010 Share #13 Posted June 8, 2010 We have the latest and greatest Dyson upright as well. It does get an amazing amount of dirt/hair/etc out of your carpets and it quite easy to empty and shove around. It seemed pricey compared to some lower end models.. but a 10 yr warranty (in Canada anyways) is hard to beat especially with the performance of this thing. It's just my opinion, but it is a very good buy.

99silver Posted June 8, 2010 Share #15 Posted June 8, 2010 Check Consumer Reports at your local book store. Kenmore still rules for canisters and I think maybe it was a Hoover for uprights, but I'm not positive. You need to get the right model #. We just went through the ordeal about 3 weeks ago and brought home the Kenmore, the wife likes canisters. She's happy, I'm happy. Gary

GaThumper Posted June 8, 2010 Share #17 Posted June 8, 2010 You may want to take a look at the Made in USA (Missouri) Simplicity brand. We bought ours three years ago and it has been a good one. I was impressed with the build quality compared to less expensive department store brands. They are not cheap, and I've never owned a Dyson, or any other mid or high end vacuum cleaner, so this is just my .01 for you to consider. Just do your homework as you are doing here. Lot's of props for the Dyson, sounds like a good option. Tacony is the parent company and also has a another brand of vacuum called Riccar. I don't know anything about them. http://www.simplicityvac.com/ http://www.tacony.com/ http://www.riccar.com/

Gary Thanks Gary... interesting comment as we were at Sears (who sell the Kenmore) and the salesman gave us some great demonstrations; however, he was leaning us towards the Dyson as a better unit over the Kenmore. We'll be taking a second look at both of them tho before we decide.
SilvrT Posted June 8, 2010 Author Share #19 Posted June 8, 2010 Shop Vac for the dust bunnies.... Then you can reverse the hose and dry off the scoot.... heh... already got a real good shop vac. My son borrowed my old one (and failed to return it) which gave me a good excuse to go get a new one. hmmmmm... come to think of it... he also borrowed my upright (a leftover from my divorce) about 5 years ago and never returned that either LOL!! danged kids !! 1 Canuck Posted June 8, 2010 Share #21 Posted June 8, 2010 Just a suggestion; thinking outside the box...what about a built-in vacuum? No canister to lug around or haul up and down the stairs; there's just a hose and attachment. I've had one for years, the canister is located out in the garage, large motor and easy to get at the container to empty. The worse part of these units is if your house is completely finished it is much harder to install.

Freebird Posted June 8, 2010 Share #23 Posted June 8, 2010 We had two previous houses with the built in vacuums. My wife hated them. Ended up never using them and used an upright instead. She said that dragging all the hose around was more work than the upright. We have a Simplicity that is probably 12 years old now. It's a good unit. I think that we would probably try a Dyson if we were to need a new one though.

SilvrT Posted June 8, 2010 Author Share #25 Posted June 8, 2010 Did a bit more research and came up with a Hoover alternate... Hoover Platinum Collection Cyclonic Bagless Canister Model:: S3865 Got any pros/cons to share on this one? It's cheaper than the Dyson model we've looked at. I should mention that we've decided to go with a cannister style instead of an upright. Figure it will work better for us. So we're kinda down to the Dyson DC21 or this Hoover model.
