I have a 98 RSTC and purchased a set of 98 RK pipes last week, new take-offs and a set of V-twin chrome clamps. I will make some brackets to hold the new pipes in-place. My question is, where do I actually make the cut to remove the stock pipes? Is there a thread or post that shows the place. I don't want to screw this part up. What type of cutting device did you guys use? lesrub@aol.com Thanks Les

Never heard of anyone having to cut them off, I do believe they are clamped on just like the ones on the 1st Gens.........but, I'm no expert, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once.........

I installed the RK pipes on my 06 RSV about a month ago. No cutting. The stock mufflers just slip out of the exhaust pipe and the RK slip right in. The hardest part should be making the new brackets.

I looked at your profile and it says you have a 1998 RS Tour Bagger - not sure what that is but if you happen to have a Tour Deluxe, you will have to cut the pipes. I guess the simple way to figure it out is to place you new RK's where you want them to be and cut your old muffs off leaving enough pipe to slide inside the RK's.

And you don't have to make a bracket - go to Lowes and get a one hole EMT pipe clamp. Get the one with a rubber insert and make it 1 1/4" size. Then get 2 stainless bolts no more than 3/4" long( might have to be 1/2") because they bottom out into the muff and won't tighten if too long. Shouldn't cost you much more than a couple bucks.

Open the clamps and put them around the frame just above the threaded receptical in the muffs - you'll see what you need to do then

Thanks for the information. My bike is a 98 RSTC with dual exhaust. My mufflers look to be welded and I don't think they will just slip off. From what I'm reading, I think that only applies to the new generation (2005-present). It should be a fun project and should be better than the stock pipes that someone before me drilled out. Currently sounds like a V-8 that is misfiring.
