My trunk lid (where the passenger backrest attaches to the lid) has significant cracking around all of the mounting bolts.

The cracks have now progressed to the point where they are visible from the outside of the trunk lid. The cracks are in excess of 2"...so I don't believe a "repair" is an option. Probably will have to replace the lid to maintain the integrity and safety of the backrest.

Should this be covered under warranty? If it IS repaired under warranty, any ideas on how I can prevent this in the future?

Yes, it is covered under warranty. Repair is quite possible, but no reason to attempt it.

I have no idea why your lid cracked; this is not something we hear much about. I'm tempted to just say to not worry about it happening again, since it is not normally a problem, but I wish I knew why it happened in the first place. :080402gudl_prv:

Yep. Mine did the same thing. 07RSV. Dealer fixed under warranty, no questions asked. Seems to be fine now. Had it fixed last summer. Good luck.:thumbsup2:

Just a thought but it might have cracked if the bolts were to tight from the factory or it could be in just a slight bind that it cracked there. Yes it can be repaired its plastic they can be welded or glued back together as I have done both. You might see if you can keep the old lid as it might come in handy later. I used to work ofr diffrent car dealers and once the factory (GM,Honda,Ford,Chrysler) paid them for the part and labor they were thrown away or if it was fixable some one who worked there would take them. You might have to wait for Yamaha to pay the dealer but if they are going to pitch it you might see if they will let you have it.
