Scooter Bob Posted June 3, 2010 #2 Posted June 3, 2010 Wife and I are planning a ride through the Catskills soon. Anyone have some tips for where to go,what see, where to stay? I might be able to in a week or so. I'll probably go through that area in my quest to stay way west of NYC as I make my way north to Conneticut. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=49132 Later, Scooter Bob
hunter 1500 Posted June 3, 2010 #3 Posted June 3, 2010 (edited) I spent a week down there riding in that area last summer. Great roads. Woodstock Museum is a must. Places to eat The summit Red Barn, The Sportsman, and there was a great Mexican resturant but I forgot the name. I'll look it up for you. Some other places to see are the Wing Castle, Howe Caverns and there is a waterfall on 23a that is very nice. Lots to see and do and like I said great roads. Here's a picture of the Mexican Resturant. It was really good. http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g51/hunter1500/IMG_0245.jpg Edited June 3, 2010 by hunter 1500
tomfromhull Posted June 5, 2010 Author #4 Posted June 5, 2010 Sorry, but I gotta bust you're chops on this one. Is the Restaurant named " La Cabana"? I've heard of the Caverns and the waterfall. We'll have to check out the museum Are the two restaurants close by? And any advice on where to stay? I was on a website that had a inn with a 5 state view that looked interesting and another place that was like a old German brew house that got good reviews. Thanks for the input
Seaking Posted June 5, 2010 #5 Posted June 5, 2010 silly question I am sure but what are "kills"... CatsKills, TreeKills, Bobskills, etc, seen 1,001 variation on the KILLS name.. what is it?
BEER30 Posted June 5, 2010 #6 Posted June 5, 2010 C & P from: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/html/fkl/fkl6.shtml . Where does the name 'Fresh Kills' come from? ‘Kill' is derived from old Dutch and means stream, brook or channel. The usage of the word ‘kill' is seen frequently in place names throughout New York City and State where early Dutch settlement occurred. It is thought that the name Fresh Kills is derived from the historical natural features of the site which, prior to landfilling, was dominated by a vast tidal wetland fed by fresh water springs and streams. It was not uncommon to use ‘fresh' when naming places with such springs. Fresh Kills, specifically, appeared as a place name by 1750.

Thanks for the input We rented an old farmhouse when we were there so I can't help you much with that. I know that the red barn is not far from Howe Caverns nothing fancy but great bbq ribs. The Cabana is the great mex restuarant that I mentioned here's a link. http://www.manta.com/c/mm5nkrf/la-cabana-mexican-restaurant The Sportsmans is another good restuarant near there. http://www.yelp.com/biz/sportsman-bar-and-grill-of-phoenicia-phoenicia These are all within easy riding distance and the roads and scenery is great. Get a ways away from the ski areas unless you want to pay big money.
tomfromhull Posted June 7, 2010 Author #8 Posted June 7, 2010 Thanks for all the help. I'll stay away from from the ski areas. Probably more fun off the beaten path.
