I looked at all the boards...couldn't figure out where to post something like this...feel free to move it if needed.

Anyway, me and a buddy are gonna make a trip to the Grand Canyon June 18th-25th.

Our plan is to head out on Friday (June 1http://www.vtxoa.com/forums/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif and be back the next Friday (June 25). It'll be a moderate riding 2 of the first 3 days...and then EASY RIDING for 2 days out in Flagstaff...and then 2 moderate days riding back to Arkansas.

Do you feel like seeing the Grand Canyon? Come with us.

2-3 people to a room...so the costs won't be that bad.

Naw...not too far. This will be a really nice ride.

Staying at the Big Texan in Amarillo the first night...can you say BIG OLE FILET MIGNON!!!

We did the Grand Canyon October 2009. NEWTrk picked up me at the Phoenix airport on his way back from his San Diego ride and we rode up to the Grand Canyon and stayed for a couple of days there before we jumped back on the bike to make it home in time to get to back to work. Fantastic ride - you'll have a great trip, take a run down through Sedona if you have time. I'll post some pictures when I get home tonight.

You'll have a great trip! Wish we could join you, but we're already planning our Smokey Mountain vacation this summer.

We'd still like to have ONE MORE person going with us. Your expenses would only be 1/3 on the rooms...so pretty inexpensive trip here.

Other than the blast down I-40, which I hate, it sounds like fun.

The Big Texan is awfully touristy...and you wont meet any locals there...if you get the time, I'd suggest diverting down old 66 in Amarillo and check out the local eateries...Smokey Joes, Golden Light...if not on the way out, then maybe on the way back. If the timing is right, I might be able to meet your group and have a meal or a beer.

On the west end of Amarillo on I-40 there is a motel called Fifth Season Inn, the prices are reasonable, ( $40 to about $60, pool, free breakfast) and its close to the west end of old route 66 in Amarillo. For most of the rooms, you can park the bike right outside your room's door. Most rooms have an inside and outside door. Big courtyard inside, for entertaining or relaxing...although weekends see the families turn out and kids are EVERYWHERE. Best enjoyed on weeknights.

If you divert thru town in Tucumcari you will see the Route 66 Tail fin I use in my signature....don't copy it tho! :D

Albuquerque area has lots to do and see...if you have the time. If your limited as to time, at least check out 'Old Town'...its not far from the interstate and great Mexican food is available, plenty of bike-friendly parking, and evenings are especially fun, as roving street musicians and other performers roam the central plaza. Fun stuff...really!

Gallup, Holbrook, and Winslow have very reasonable room rates, but you will probably make it to Flagstaff from Amarillo.

BTW...3 to a room sounds kinky...

:innocent:

Brian,

Excellent information there. I will run this by the other guy and we'll probably take your advice(s). Especially for Amarillo and Albuquerque. I'll let you know what we decide on...and maybe I can buy you a beer in Amarillo.

Thanks again...Killer info!!

I just got back from a trip to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. On the way to the north rim there is a place called Jacob Lake, we spent the night there and i would not recommend this place. One other place not to go is Four Corners, closed for construction.

The rest of our trip was great, we did get in some hot weather and on the way home a little rain.

enjoy your trip

Any word on when Four Corners will reopen? I'll be there around Labor Day (September). Thanks for the North Rim info too. We're planning to camp on the rim, but who knows what weather will be like?

Edit: this says,

** Closures until September 2010 for construction, call before traveling. **

** Open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays for Summer **

We did not see anything on when it will open. There was a young couple there that came from OK. said that she had looked on the parks web site and the info. that she got said the park would be open on Fri, Sat and Sun from 8 to 5. When we left she was on the phone with them and she was hot.

It was hot in Page Az. when we left there but not as hot in as it was in Marble Canyon,i seen 108 on my thermometer.

If your around Albuquerque the weekend of the 19th, I would like to meet up if I'm not working. Might be able to ride a distance with you. Really doesn't seem you will have a lot of time. Amarillo to the Grand canyon is a good hard day 600+ miles. Might be able to show you a nicer shorter route off the interstate. Give me a call when you are in Amarillo my # is on my profile. Not many Venture memebers around here, so the wife and I ride alot by ourselves, or a few Harley and Honda riders we know.

It's all good.
