Kregerdoodle Posted May 28, 2010 #1 Posted May 28, 2010 any one here a Tractor guru?? I am looking for a starter for my `54 VAC, I found new /re-built starters at one place on line, but they want about what I payed for the tractor....
Freebird Posted May 28, 2010 #2 Posted May 28, 2010 I have no idea what kind of tractor you have. I assume the VAC is a Case? Do you know what is wrong with the starter? Here is a repair kit but I'm not sure if it would work on your starter or not. http://cgi.ebay.com/Case-Tractor-VAC-Gas-Starter-Repair-Kit-MZ4114-/230405711470?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35a540266e
Kregerdoodle Posted May 28, 2010 Author #3 Posted May 28, 2010 yes it is a Case, I have tore the starter apart, replaced the stud that the bat. cable connects to, the problem is that all of the insulation is so brittle that I think it is pretty much junk..Thanks for the link, I`ll check it out. K
RedRider Posted May 28, 2010 #4 Posted May 28, 2010 You might be able to go to an Auto Electric shop or a motor rewinder and get it rewound. Just a thought. RR
Ponch Posted May 28, 2010 #5 Posted May 28, 2010 Kreg, there's a pretty good alternator shop near me that rebuilds starters and such.
Kregerdoodle Posted May 28, 2010 Author #6 Posted May 28, 2010 I may need to check them out, the brushes look good, the armiture is worn, and the insulation is very britle and falling apart...kinda like anything else that is over 50yrs old..LOL What time ya`ll comin out tomorrow?? Kreg, there's a pretty good alternator shop near me that rebuilds starters and such.

Freebird Posted May 28, 2010 #8 Posted May 28, 2010 Yea...I've noticed that too. Seems that ever since I passed that 50 year mark, I've become brittle and pretty much falling apart.
Karl C. Posted May 28, 2010 #9 Posted May 28, 2010 back in the day I had a lincoln mark 7. alt died, new one was around 160 bux... well i found a rebuilder to rebuilt it and also beef it up for 35 bux that was just great... but that was also 18 years ago
Kregerdoodle Posted May 28, 2010 Author #10 Posted May 28, 2010 ok, but Kreg`s Kitchen closes at 0800............ I may save some Coffee for ya though.. I'll check wit Squid. Don't wanna get there before him, you know. I'm just sayin'
Gary N. Posted May 28, 2010 #11 Posted May 28, 2010 Kreg, just curious. What do you use that old Case for? I have a couple of old tractors. A '52 Harry Ferguson 2085 and a '53 Massey Harris 33. Neither has live PTO but both have 3 point hitch. Only use I have is for pulling out bushes or pushing snow. So they are mostly just barn ornaments.
Kregerdoodle Posted May 28, 2010 Author #12 Posted May 28, 2010 Gary, I havn`t been able to use it yet, it is in great shape, other then starter..LOL looked like it was kept in a barn for years, picked it and a brush hog up for $600.00 I thought that was a great deal...any way, I will probably just use it for brush hogging the pasture and I also have a straight blade for it if I think something needs messed up.. I have a `53 8N that I am going to sell, it needs work, tires, dist.cap, rotor,points,wires..but it will run if I change that stuff out, but the rear tires are shot.. Kreg, just curious.
