Shipper Posted May 26, 2010 #1 Posted May 26, 2010 My troubles began about a month ago when I had an oil change and decided to try a synthetic by using Mobile 1 20w-50. My whine (which really didn't bother me) turned into a scream. I talked with the service manager and he grudgingly agreed to get me an "I" basket and we both agreed on going back to Dino. The factory tech suggested Yamalube (surprise) 20w-50. When I first drove the bike it seemed to be considerably better-the scream back to a whine and at a different pitch. A 100 miles later the whine is getting louder and so I decide to try Rotella 15w-40 and major difference. I'm beginning to believe it's the oil viscosity and will try 10w-30 at the next oil change (I've had 3 oil changes in the last 200 miles). It may not be just the basket but also viscosity. For the 1st 4000 miles I was using Yamalube 10w-40 and the whine didn't bother me. I had thought my troubles began when I went to synthetic, but I now believe it was because of the change to 20w-50. After I enjoy my bike again for a while, I may try synthetic again but at no higher than 40 weight-I think Amsoil makes a 10w-30. Something to think about!
SilvrT Posted May 26, 2010 #2 Posted May 26, 2010 I went thru numerous oil changes, trying this and that... thought Rotella T 15w40 was pretty good but I recently changed to Castrol 10w40 and it not only sounds a bit better, the shifting is better so, I believe the viscosity has a lot to do with it. 20w50 around here is just too high I think.
FreezyRider Posted May 26, 2010 #3 Posted May 26, 2010 That is why I run Rotella Synthetic which is 5W-40. It is the quietest I have found. If they made a 5w-30 syn I'd probably try that too.

jfoster Posted May 26, 2010 #5 Posted May 26, 2010 I made the mistake of using castrol 20w-50 the first summer I had my RSTD...OMG it was drained out as soon as I got home. Since they replaced the g basket with the i, i'm in good graces with the RSTD. Not sure what weight the dealer put in it but, its doing a good job. I was using rotella syn 5w-30 before the swap. I'm hesistate to go back to it, it was the quietest but, the tranny felt under-lubed if that makes since. I may go back with the rotella 15w-40 or yamaha's 10w-40 depending on price. Tranny felt really good with rotella's 15w-40. One of the guys made the comment that when he tugged onto basket before the swap it was tight and with the "i" it had a little give. Maybe thats why the thin oil makes a difference...maybe its able to get to places the think oil can't???
Cougar Posted May 26, 2010 #6 Posted May 26, 2010 Ditto what Joe Say's-- the Rotella 15/40 is the best so far. even better then Amzoil. mine was the worst with Mobile 20w-50
Freebird Posted May 26, 2010 #7 Posted May 26, 2010 I've been using Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W-40 in my '99 for almost 11 years. I have no desire to try anything different. http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Mobil1_Racing_4T_10W-40.aspx
friesman Posted May 26, 2010 #9 Posted May 26, 2010 And you do not have the whine as well. I dont know about that, i think that Freebird does have the whine............. and its all of us complaining about it.....:stickpoke::rotf: Brian
Freebird Posted May 26, 2010 #10 Posted May 26, 2010 Mine has a little. Nothing that I consider excessive though.

It looks like you are on the same track as I am. I think that not only the viscosity but also the manufacturer of the oil. I just put Rotella synthetic 5w-40 in and the whine got a lot better. I noticed the whine after I switched from the Yamalube to another dino oil of a different viscosity. I switched to Rotella synthetic and a big improvement. The last Time I bought the Rotella I noticed Rotella is now made in a blend 10w-30 which is the weight that my owners manual ask for. So next oil change I'm trying the Rotella 10w-30 blend and see what happens.
Double D Posted May 27, 2010 #13 Posted May 27, 2010 Well I had the "I" basket installed and at the same time I switched to Amsoil 20-50. Don't know if it was the basket, the oil or both but the whine is totally gone and I have tried to find it at all RPM levels and speeds. I just hope I never find it again.
