So, somebody talk to me about the intercom! We've been using a scala rider wireless set up, but are getting tired of it failing to "open" the mike when you talk. Better than nothing, but a LONG way from relliable IMHO.

Looking at the hard wired set up on the bike. My question, if I'm running down the pike listening to the radio and I wanna talk with the wife then I'd hit the "talk" button on the bar, right? If not, how do we switch back and forth? Yeah, I know a dumb question, but the instructions in the owner's manual tonight look pretty "confusing" (or maybe I'm just tired??)

Thanks ALL!

No, unless you install a Mic-Mutes, the mic is always hot for the intercom. You would only use the push to talk button when using the CB.

That being said, I highly recommend the Mic-Mutes as it eliminates all the wind noise that can be caused by the mics being hot all the time. If you install the Mic-Mutes, you simply momentarily pulse the push to talk button, front or rear, to activate the mic. You pulse it again to turn them back off.

chrome world sells a j/m helmet set for $79.00 that works great. we and a few of our winger friends have them. we dont have micmutes and we dont have problems. you may or may not? i would try without before buying them incase your one of the lucky ones. yes you can just talk and she will hear, but on the flip side of that she will talk and you`ll have to listen! theres no turning her off without micmutes. maybe micmutes arent a bad ideal? where do go to get them?

Huh.. My scala Q2 setup works perfectly. bot we ride with full face helmets (composite) and we use a on word. "HEY" loud will always turn the intercom back on. It took only a short time for us to get completely used to it.

I wonder if the Rider setup is different. I chose the Q2 so she can yack on her cellphone to her friends instead of me.:big-grin-emoticon:

Thanks guys! I dunno what the deal is with the Scala Rider setup. Sometimes it works fine, other times (same ride) it will shut off the mike in the middle of speaking or not turn on despite talking a good bit. I've tried "Hey" , Hello Hello Hello (think Larry, Moe and Curly:big-grin-emoticon:) and nothing happens, then, when you're about to give up, suddenly it is working loud and clear. weird...

Anyway, got me to thinking about using the built in unit (also, looks like it would give me better radio reception on my XM:motorcyclehelmet:) FWIW we both are using flipfront helmets (Nolan 102 and AGV Miglia)

Thanks for the input.

The mic mutes are not needed to work the intercom, as when the volume is turned up on the intercom, all you have to do is talk and you hear everything, your passengar says and you can hear yourself as well.

If you have volume too loud you hear wind noise, the stereo, etc..

I use J&M headsets and will be ordering Mic Mute soon. It hurts my ears when my wife yells at me for scraping the floorboards. :)
The Mic Mute won't help you there. My wife took to slaping the side of my helmit

Brad,

I'm not sure what you are saying. If you have the Mic Mutes installed, then you Do have to use it to talk on the intercom. That is what it's for. You just toggle the mics on and off with a quick press and release of the push to talk buttons. When you are done talking, another quick press and release turns them off again. That means they are not "live" all the time so you don't get all the noise. When using the CB, you just hold the push to talk button in as you normally would.

I've had the mic mutes for a year and my wife and I just got back from a trip to North Carolina. I can't imagine using the intercom without the mic mute. When we activate the mics to talk the road noise is awful. If I had to listen to the road noise all the time it would be unbearable. God bless the mic mutes.
