Maybe i'm not getting my point across. One last try, then I will give it a rest.

Facebook and VentureRider and MySpace and anyone else has the right to censor any and everything on their own site. Thats a given. No argument there. A person's option is to use, or not use, the website.

But Facebook has implemented a new email system that they promote as being an equivalent for regular email. Not an internal messaging system, from one user of the service to another, like this board. But, instead, its an email connection to other users on yahoomail, gmail, hotmail and other email services. You sign up for it and get a "yourname@facebook.com" type of address. This email address is supposed to (more or less) replace standard email.

But..would you like it if yahoo, gmail, or hotmail was censoring content of YOUR emails? They only stop spam if you tell them to..using filters and spam guards and such, that delete or at least quarantine any suspected emails. You can always opt out of using the filters, if you want to get ads for viagra and cable descramblers, and lost bank accounts in nigeria. But with simple spam filters in place, they dont try to censor portions of the CONTENT that I was sending to you.

If I send you a simple email from my gmail acct telling you all about my vacation in another country, and include a link to a website in my email address, and then send it to your "you@facebook" email because thats the address your using, you may not get exactly what I send...instead you might receive a message with my paragraphs intact but the link is blocked and the message says something to the effect of " we have deleted certain content from this message".

It wasnt porn or illegal websites they censored(1), its a file-sharing website. And like a gun or alchohol, there are legal and illegal uses for that type of website. Its just that Mark Zuckerburg feels like you should not be getting links to that website, so hes gonna 'protect' you and the rich copyright holders.

In other words, he assumes you will be involved in illegal activity and censors the link.

"Big Brother" in action.

One of the wonderful things about regular email is that its NOT censored when you send it out. If I send you pictures or links that may or may not be proper, questionable, or even in good taste, they still get where they are going. The recipient is free to engage a spam guard or block the sender...but that is the recipients choice....not some 'overlord' deciding that you shouldnt be able to see a link.

Whats next? Will King Mark be censoring religious emails? Deleting pictures of your 1 year old in diapers? Killing links to political blogs?

Seems a no-brainer to me. OPT OUT OF FACEBOOK. The guy is out of control.

Thats all.

I understand. I looked at the second article posted (http://www.freep.com/article/2010111...60315/0/NEWS18) and see what you are talking about now. Yikes.

The first article posted on geek.com used the 'censored' language and whatnot but was specifically referring to (at least the images they showed) were that of the 'share link' function which is much different than the actual "e-mail" like function is a different animal.

By the way my last post was not directed at you so much as all of the whining I hear while I am realizing now that much of what I was thinking about while writing my response was sourced outside of the folks on here -- (there have been times in some of my classes where there may be a lot of chatter from some of my students about something they put up on facebook that came back to bite them later).

Well, I'm not going to get into a public argument about it here. This is a subject that has been discussed here and voted on by the members more than once. We have few rules and the ones that we do have are made very clear before anybody has to decide if they want to officially join or not. I think that the rules we have in place are most acceptable to the majority here and that is the best we can do.

I am pretty sure Jerry was being facetious and Tx2sturgis's post was addressing only the views that facebook takes on these issues.

I don't know that anyone has a problem with the way things are managed here. :thumbsup2:

My opinions on the way Facebook or its public email service operates are not in anyway related to the way this website or any other is operated. The two are not compare-able.

Facebook has over 500 million members and is like a defacto standard for a broad cross-section of humanity at this time. The facebook email service connects with the outside world. It could, in theory, be the ONLY way some people get ANY email.

VentureRider.org is a tiny little drop in the motorcycle-related, social network bucket, and messages sent from its members are NOT connected to the public email system. (That I know of!) You cant send email from venturerider.org to your Aunt Mabel in Kalamazoo..UNLESS she is ALSO a member here.

Private messages between members on this website are NOT actual 'email'. You cant send an email FROM this website TO joe_smith@mailservice.com using the website's internal message service. Its not the same. And if someone was using the private, internal message service here to contact another member with say, an offer to sell something illegal like drugs, child porn, or adult services, then he has every right and duty to censor that and eliminate the offending member. Thats quite obvious to me.

When you visit a mans website, or his house, you abide by the rules or leave. Thats pretty plain and simple...and the way it SHOULD be. So thats why I dont participate in the facebook world. I wont follow the facebook rules and I wont let them compromise my privacy and let them market me to the advertisers.

And I dont think Don cares what we send in public email like Gmail, YahooMail, or Hotmail, to each other...or your family or friends. BUT...if he or anyone somehow reached out into your private yahoo mail and said...no you cant send that link...then, THAT would be a problem.

By the way, that fictitious email link I included, when clicked, will cause your browser to bring up your email program, and send it via YOUR email provider, whoever that is...its not actually being sent FROM here. This is the case with any email link that contains the "@" symbol and a top-level domain, such as "com" or "net".

Well said. Just to clarify one small point though. Private messages and emails sent to each other here are NOT read nor censored in any way. If you send an email to another member through the email function of this site, it does user the VentureRider server but is not monitored in any way. The only way that I would get involved here in private messages and/or emails would be if one member claimed that they were being harassed by another.

Your email address is never made public here unless you post it in a thread or send it to somebody.

Hey Beav,

You were correct in your assumption, but I knew what the response would be when I made the comment.

Friends:

Facebook does not appeal to me, never has. I tried it, added one or two friends, and I have only made a couple of entries in 3 years, and only checked it about twice a year.

Now we hear of all the politics and corruption, and security problems, and now to top it off Mark Zuckerberg, a billionaire and co-founder of FB, called the users of Facebook, and I quote: "Dumb f**ks". ( he used ALL the letters!)

How can you stay in a place like that?

I prefer MySpace because its rich in media content and I've met many good friends there. Sure, its not perfect, but good enough for me! I plan to stay on MySpace.

Below are several links dealing with the problems of FB, and quitting FB, or heck, just google "how to quit facebook".

I know some of you are addicted and will never quit. At least look at some of these pages and then make your decision, with full knowledge of the outcome.

What's facebook ??

And by the way, MySpace is pretty much ruined now also....jeeze....its kinda like Radio Shack.

Once upon a time it was something enjoyable...now its so morphed it bears little resemblance to its former self.

But oh well....they didnt ask me what I thought...

Ok, I didn't know sarcasm was banned on this site. Also, what argument? I made a point and felt it was proven to be true. I will read the rules again.

1, I read the links, I don't see where is says they are censoring anything. How do you know they are censoring?

2. the CIA will have connections to the top 3 or 4 social computer networks to find the information they want. If everyone moved off Facebook to something else, so would the CIA. The only way you can be sure they don't have computer information on you, is to never connect you computer to the internet at all.

3. Why should I avoid all of Facebook just because their e-mail sucks. I just won't use their e-mail, I have an Android phone with Gmail, and I don't use that either.

So, what did we all do to communicate before all of these FB's and MYSpace things came about? Oh yea, it was the telephone and the mail..........And before you go off on the mail system, remember im a postal worker....you are warned. And I KNOW where you ALL live.....:smile5:
