Trader Posted August 24, 2010 #26 Posted August 24, 2010 so what are people doing for rotted out collectors? I saw pics of one custom set of collector pipes being done by Karl (IC23B)...but curious if anyone else has suggestions or pics of what they did??
Freebird Posted August 24, 2010 #27 Posted August 24, 2010 Does anyone make a 4 into 4 setup? I've never seen a 4 into 4 system for these bikes. Sorry.
MasterGuns Posted August 24, 2010 #28 Posted August 24, 2010 So i tried looking around and didn't come up with much, what options are out there for exhaust? I would prefer slipons but would not be opposed to modifying the stock exhaust if there are not better options. I just want to get some sound out of it, not too much but that v4 should sound great with the right set of pipes!!! Just installed a set of brand new Macs this weekend. Was a real PITA to get them mounted properly; had to build some custom hangers to make em work. Found them on fleabay and made the seller an offer he couldn't refuse. Sure do look good and you're right, the sound is mellow, not loud and obnoxious, just mellow. But under WOT, kinda reminds me of a high revving small block Chevy. Good luck finding anything aftermarket; keep an eye out for em on ebay.
JoeKanuck Posted August 24, 2010 #29 Posted August 24, 2010 After taking off the mufflers to work on the rear end of my bike, I noticed that there was a lot of crap rattling around in my pipes. Unfortunately, I hadn't had a chance to use my brand new Makita recip saw and the batteries were charged...sooooo...the fat ends were soon off the mufflers. There were various pipes and baffles creating a mess so I bashed away at the inside until the loose bits saw the error of their ways and fell out. I welded the ends back on, covered the rather ugly welds and rust holes with muffler tape and aluminum duct tape, (for that custom crinkly, yet shiny finish), and bolted them back on. They are slightly louder and deeper. They definitely sound better but for the effort and less than 10 buck price tag, you can't beat the results.
Venturous Randy Posted August 25, 2010 #30 Posted August 25, 2010 less than $60 plus my time and I gave the the mechanic 420 tip for his extra time. david Wow David, that's a pretty good tip!!! RandyA
painterman67 Posted August 25, 2010 #31 Posted August 25, 2010 Wow David, that's a pretty good tip!!! RandyA yeah I meant $20 not 420 but in some circles 420 is a nice tip david
TDunc Posted August 25, 2010 #32 Posted August 25, 2010 Baron Bag Slash with baffles on mine. Soft enough when need to be and loud enough when you get on it. I ride in groups some and the people that follow always say they sound nice but not too loud. Not one person has complained.
Pappa Bear Posted August 25, 2010 #33 Posted August 25, 2010 I have road kings on my 89 like painterman, but let metell ya at Dons maint. day I heard a bike running an I just had to see what he had on there! lyle62801 Posted April 13, 2011 #35 Posted April 13, 2011 I just took the factory pipes off the bike. I then mounted a pair of cycle shack slip-ons from a 2001 sportster using the factory brackets! My Bike sounds like a pair of V-Twins, and Mean as hell when i get on it! normal driving habit has a sweet rumble that is accepting to the ears, while hot rodding gets loud and down right Mean! ok here is the scoop! 86 Venture Royale Parts: 1-pair of Cycle Shack slip ons with slash out 2001 sportster model! Important to get slash out, because when your done they will become slash down! 2- Bicycle seat clamps for 3/4" seat post 4- 5/16" bolts with flt washers and lock washers 2- custom made pipes that cost me 20$ at local muffler shop 1st I removed stock mufflers, then i took the 2 seat clamps and opened them up to 90 deg. Then i bolted one side of seat clamp to the down bracket that i think is used for the pulling hitch. I Bolted the other side of the seat clamp to the stock bracket on the slip on. repeat on both sides. now the slip ons stick out the back like factory muffler did, and it is slash down. Using the seat clamps will place the slip ons below the plastic on the back giving perfect clearance! I took measurements, and had two pipe cut and bent for me at the muffler shop, cost 20$ each pipe was 6"-10DEG. bend-then 22-1/2" 1-3/4 O.D. Pipe The short end fits inside the slip-ons, and the long side was flared to 1-3/4 I.D. and fits over the pipe from the exhaust collector on the bike where factory pipe were connected! Factory Clamps at the collector end, and New Clamps at the slip ons! Final Touch, Chrome Heat Shields on the new pipe! Final Result, slip-ons i had, everything else 20$, and I have the baddest sounding bike I have ever heard! I can sneak in at night, or wake up the neighborhood if I feel the need!

BrileyR Posted April 14, 2011 #37 Posted April 14, 2011 lyle62801, post some pics, I'd like to see those pipes. Where did you get the heat shields? I put HD pipes on my 87' and need to cover the new connector pipe. Briley.
longrider805 Posted April 23, 2011 #38 Posted April 23, 2011 RK's on my 87, tucked in tight and hung from the bag mount brackets. The heat shields are from an 86 HD FXRSomethinorother, crazy thing is that it fits either the left or right side. Sound good, not obnoxious.
BrileyR Posted April 23, 2011 #39 Posted April 23, 2011 longrider, those shields look great, makes the new pipes look factory. I've got to find some of those! Briley.
