Goofeychuck Posted May 23, 2010 #1 Posted May 23, 2010 I found a small puddle of oil under my bike. It was dripping from the rear shock but I dont know where its coming from. Help!!!!!
hig4s Posted May 23, 2010 #2 Posted May 23, 2010 From the rear shock? They sometimes have seals go bad, I believe if you remove the rubber boot on the shock, if it is the shock, there will be oil in there. If not, it could be from the overflow tubes hanging down in front of the rear tire. If you just did an oil change and put in too much oil it can come out there.
Condor Posted May 23, 2010 #3 Posted May 23, 2010 Those '99's and maybe a few years afterwards had shocks that didn't last all that long.. It was one of the things members suggested to check when looking at my '99. Luckily it had been replaced under warantee in 2004. Hopefully the replacement will last longer.... The PO never added any air presure to the suspension front or rear since he bought it new.... Hope it doesn't screw things up....
V7Goose Posted May 23, 2010 #4 Posted May 23, 2010 If it's dripping from the shock, then the only possibility is the shock is bad. There are several vent hoses near the shock on the left side, but they rarely drip more than a drop or two. The bottom line is that if there is ANY oil on the bottom of the shock, the shock is bad. All 2nd gens have had problems with weak rear shocks - it is not uncommon for them to fail in 10 - 15,000 miles. The minor design change they made somewhere around 2005 or 2006 made the problem a little better, but not much. Goose
thecount Posted May 24, 2010 #5 Posted May 24, 2010 So my '05 warranty ended on May 9/2010. Have not riden for about 2 weeks, but to find a similar small collection of oil under the rear shock location on the back end. Sounds like a seal or rear shock gone? Comments? If the dealer acknowledges the fault and warranty, BUT I don't think so, what are my alternatives for the rear shock replacement, seeing as factory items seem to be a challenge for consistancy. We ride 2 up most of the time, so, need to make this happen since we are looking get out over the good weather we finally have. I have 40,000 KM (26,000 mile) on a 5 year old bike, funny how warranty runs out, just when you need it. Appreciate any comments.
YamaDuck Posted May 25, 2010 #6 Posted May 25, 2010 Rear shock. 2nd gens are know for it. $466 out of Oregon or $700 for a Progressive.

Once again, just for extra clarity... Do not look at oil on the floor to try and guess what is wrong. Look at the bottom of the shock itself and the lower mounting bolt. If there is oil on the bottom of the shock, it is bad. If the bottom of the shock is dry, it is not bad. I don't think it can be any more clear than that. Goose
RossKean Posted May 25, 2010 #8 Posted May 25, 2010 These guys list it for $427. http://www.yamahasportsplaza.com/

Sounds like he is placing a warranty claim for the shock. Will know at the end of the day for the warranty claim and work. Will be without the bike for the next few days as they remove/install the shock.

I know that I have read where some folks on here have lucked out and get taken care of by Yamaha/their dealer, when slightly out of the warranty period. Even if you end up having to split the cost with them, that is better than buying a new shock and putting it on yourself.
thecount Posted July 8, 2010 #11 Posted July 8, 2010 So, Finally a little positive news. The shock had to be inspected by a Yamaha Factory person:stickpoke:, agreed it was warranty for the shock. Dealer put the shock in for only the labour cost. The Factory rep, wanted to see dealer service records for the swing arm re-pack and the steering column re-pack as specified in the warranty guidelines. Provided what I could. Was to their satisfaction. It only took nearly 2 months to figure this all out and get solved, but successful outcome in my opinion. Happy riding!
Freebird Posted July 8, 2010 #12 Posted July 8, 2010 Glad that they are covering the shock but if the bike is still actually under warranty, labor should be covered also.
Guest tx2sturgis Posted July 8, 2010 #13 Posted July 8, 2010 So, The Factory rep, wanted to see dealer service records for the swing arm re-pack and the steering column re-pack as specified in the warranty guidelines. Happy riding! You mentioned it was actually out of warranty as of May 9. So it was a gratis replacement, admittedly. Still, I wonder what the heck the steering head bearings have to do with the shock going bad...sounds like he was trying to find any reason to get out of providing one.

Head steering had nothing to do with the warranty or shock. It was purely the Rep's way of saying, " did you do the required/suggested maintainance as documented in the guide". Yes I was out of warranty by 7 days. Hence the challenge to get the full thing covered or even the shock covered. I thought it was a very reasonable compromise and the scoot is running very well. Had the dealer put in the Diamond R link levels at the same time, since they were working on the bottom end. I do have comment the dealer was GREAT to work with on this. He was extremely helpful and accommodating. Ride ON!
