rumboogy Posted May 21, 2010 #1 Posted May 21, 2010 OK so I decided that I wanted a cover to go on my gas cap...for two reasons. One, to eliminate any glare off the purty chrome. And secondly, to have something to set my gas cap onto when I am gassing up the bike. Here's the one I bought. http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/accessories/acscitemdetail/5/4/83/407/all/1/186/0/detail.aspx To make a long story short...this thing SUCKS!!! So, I had a buddy of mine make me one. I thought he did a fine job on this. My name of my website is ArkieBiker and he customized this one for me. Fits like a glove and I don't have to struggle like HECK to get the thing over the cap. Plus, this one will hold up a LOT longer than the Yamaha piece of crap. I just wanted to share it with some of you here. Wally
Aussie Annie Posted May 21, 2010 #3 Posted May 21, 2010 Would your buddy like some business?? I bet some folk's in here would like one of those, I know I would!
rumboogy Posted May 21, 2010 Author #4 Posted May 21, 2010 I don't know...I'll ask him. I can tell you that he did this for me and he lives 60 miles away from me and has never seen a Venture before...did this from MY instructions. Wally
rumboogy Posted May 21, 2010 Author #6 Posted May 21, 2010 It doesn't. It just slips off and then you have access to the gas cap. But I also use the cover to set the gas cap into when I am filling up. Wally
eusa1 Posted May 21, 2010 #7 Posted May 21, 2010 How does this work with the key?? ya gotsta untie all them threads and then sew em back up when yer dun..
rumboogy Posted May 21, 2010 Author #8 Posted May 21, 2010 Now that's funny...I don't care who ya are!
1BigDog Posted May 21, 2010 #10 Posted May 21, 2010 ya gotsta untie all them threads and then sew em back up when yer dun.. Oh god, seeing this at 4:30 AM just before going to bed brought tears to my eyes. I cant stop laughing.....
jer878 Posted May 21, 2010 #11 Posted May 21, 2010 I'd be in for one if there is a production run. I too piddeled my money away on the OEM POS. Keep me in mind please. Jim
Hazenson Posted May 21, 2010 #12 Posted May 21, 2010 A very inexpensive idea is a round piece of black felt like cloth and a womans hair bungy (tye) or whatever ya call it.. Thats what Ive had for awhile. BUT, I like that one and he could sell a bunch id bet
Owen Posted May 21, 2010 #13 Posted May 21, 2010 ya gotsta untie all them threads and then sew em back up when yer dun.. Well I guess its like a coke machine... You gotta be smarter than the machine in order to operate it. Hope that new fangled do-dad comes with directions!
Squidley Posted May 21, 2010 #14 Posted May 21, 2010 That looks good Wally, I have had the Yamaha one for quite a while now and in the beginning it takes a while to break it in. I do like what your friend has done and I'm sure that there would be folks here willing to part with their cash to have one of those
rumboogy Posted May 21, 2010 Author #15 Posted May 21, 2010 I will talk to him and see what his thoughts are...he is working on a leather patch for me right now...HE DOES AWESOME GRAPHICS ON LEATHER. He has also made me a VERY nice drink holder (that I don't have anymore)... I will talk to him and get some ideas and costs and report back. Wally
Missionary Rider Posted May 21, 2010 #16 Posted May 21, 2010 Looks a lot better than the black duct tape version I'm using. Put me on the list and I'll pick mine up in person! Lynn
rumboogy Posted May 21, 2010 Author #18 Posted May 21, 2010 OK...I just now talked to Dave. He has the template left over from when he did my gas cap cover (and it works great). I used it today and it fits nicely, but also serves as HOLDER for the gas cap when you are filling up. Anyway, Dave is a great guy and my only motive is an alternative to that crappy cover from Yamaha...In other words, I get nothing from him whether he sells ONE cap or a hundred caps. He can do them plain for $30 or you can send him your artwork (or initials, etc) and he charges $40 for those. He said it takes about 3-4 hours for each one (that comes out to $7/hour). Anyway...here is an order form: http://www.arkansasbiker.net/leather/leatherorder.doc (Word Document) http://www.arkansasbiker.net/leather/leatherorder.pdf (PDF File) Here are examples of what he did for me: http://www.arkansasbiker.net/leather/gascover1.jpg http://www.arkansasbiker.net/leather/gascover2.jpg http://www.arkansasbiker.net/leather/gascover3.jpg I am just trying to help my fellow Venture riders a chance for some handcrafted accessories. This guy didn't ask me to do this...it was my idea. If this outside the scope of this forum...please ignore or delete it. Thanks. Also...Please direct all your questions directly to Dave and not on here. Wally
MLCRIDER Posted May 21, 2010 #19 Posted May 21, 2010 Very Nice! I too do not like the glare on my windsheild friend of mine with a Venture showed me his trick was to take a foam beverage holder push the bottom out, slide it over the gas cap stick your water bottle or the venture cup you bought from Don last winter in there you have a beverage holder without the glare, downside it is not easy to look at when parked so I pull it off an through it in the bag, 8000 miles have never had one blown off.
CMIKE Posted May 21, 2010 #20 Posted May 21, 2010 That one does look great. Be sure and let us know if they do make some extra to sell. In the mean time...all you guys with the OEM POS send them to me.
Aussie Annie Posted May 22, 2010 #21 Posted May 22, 2010 Rumboogy, thanks for talking to your friend Hope I haven't created a nightmare for him. Would a cover with "VR.org" or "Venture Rider" be easier than a lot of individual artwork (just wondering ) And wouldn't you know that the dollar just took a nose dive AARRGGGHH
