Motorcycle Mike Posted May 17, 2010 #1 Posted May 17, 2010 I need to get a backrest. After doing a search, it appears to be a draw between the Diamond R and the Utopia with everyone being happy with their choice. I'm leaning toward the Utopia because it's $41 cheaper. Is there a reason other than them being a sponser of this board, that I should fork over more for the Diamond R backrest? Thanks for any advice.
CMIKE Posted May 17, 2010 #2 Posted May 17, 2010 I enjoy my Utopia and my desicion was the same as yours.
Brake Pad Posted May 17, 2010 #3 Posted May 17, 2010 I need a vise, to bend my Diamond back a few inches, It pushes me up on my tank. Noop!!!, Still haven't gotten around to it fella's
Bummer Posted May 17, 2010 #4 Posted May 17, 2010 Last I heard you had to drill out (enlarge) the holes the Utopia is bolted to. The Diamond R bolts on to the front of the passenger's seat with no drilling.
PastorPaul Posted May 17, 2010 #5 Posted May 17, 2010 I love my utopia. and the drilling took all of 2 min to do.
hig4s Posted May 17, 2010 #6 Posted May 17, 2010 I love my utopia. and the drilling took all of 2 min to do. Same here.
Bummer Posted May 17, 2010 #8 Posted May 17, 2010 I love my utopia. and the drilling took all of 2 min to do.For me it wasn't the time, it was the fact it was required.
bongobobny Posted May 17, 2010 #9 Posted May 17, 2010 Happy with my Diamond R but I'm just plain happy to have a backrest period...
csogbk Posted May 17, 2010 #11 Posted May 17, 2010 Love my Utopia, the drilling was no problem and its super comfortable!
YamaGeezer Posted May 18, 2010 #12 Posted May 18, 2010 I have the Diamond R and it matches the pillow top seat perfectly.
rickardracing Posted May 18, 2010 #13 Posted May 18, 2010 I have the Utopia. Drilling a hole is no big deal. For some. Get what you want. If you have to drill a hole, just be careful not to hit the fender hen you go through.
JoenLinda Posted May 18, 2010 #14 Posted May 18, 2010 I just got the Utopia and I can't imagine any other backrest being better than this is. The instructions were some of the best I've seen, the entire job only took 30 minutes and it pivots forward/backward and swivels up and down with the angle of my back. The materials and workmanship are perfect. You'll be glad you got it.
SteveP Posted May 18, 2010 #15 Posted May 18, 2010 +1 for the Utopia. It, too, matches the pillow top seat exactly. My passenger likes the detachable bag that goes on the back of the backrest (facing her)... perfect to hold her cell phone or a snack. I put a scrap board between the bracket and the fender when drilling out the hole... just in case.
midnite Posted May 18, 2010 #16 Posted May 18, 2010 Who needs a vice. I mounted mine, it pushed a little forward, so I pushed back. It's finer than frog hair now. Wouldn't take nothing for it. Thanks Diamond R for producing a great backrest:thumbsup2: Well worth the
Blackjack Posted May 18, 2010 #17 Posted May 18, 2010 I love my utopia. and the drilling took all of 2 min to do. I really liked Paul's Utopia backrest, as well! I've had his bike for the last month-and-a-half or more and he just got it back from me Saturday afternoon, after getting his Doctor's OK to ride again, which he wasted no time doing on Sunday! It's really great to see him recovering so well from his recent surgeries. Welcome back to the wonderful world of riding, Paul! TERRY
Motorcycle Mike Posted May 18, 2010 Author #18 Posted May 18, 2010 Thanks guys! I just pulled the trigger on the Utopia. It's supposed to ship on 5/31 so it should arrive in plenty of time for vacation starting on 6/17.
