A frined of mine who is a VA State Trooper was involved in a crash today while on duty. He was attempting to pull over a truck that was traveling 85 in a 55 zone, when the truck driver slammed on the brakes.

He locked up his brakes and hit the rear of the truck at 60mph. He was pinned beteween his bike and the guardrail. He was taken to the local hospital and is very lucky to be alive. Actually, he made out well considering the severity of the accident. He has a bruised femur and pelvis. He has a broken jaw and some cuts and bruising on the face, but is expected to be released form the hospital late tonight or in the morning.

Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

I'd be interested to hear of the outcome of the truck driver, after the troopers buddy's "interviewed" him! Please pass on well wishes from us here in Central Indiana and God speed in his recovery.

Don't take what he posted so personal. Maybe the officer should have allowed more room between him and the truck but the truck should NOT have slammed on the brakes. :bang head:

OK where did the post go that I was replying too?

Now I am confused.

i don't know which "moderator" made the catch, but i am GLAD that he did!

that post was TOTALLY, out of line.

sorry.

that's just my opinion.

OK, I was wondering where it went. It was there and then when I typed my reply it was gone.........poof. :confused24:

I edited my response since it disappeared, but thought that my response was rather diplomatic all things considered.

The truck driver received several traffic citations at the scene, but once the investigation is complete he may be receving additional charges.

Hhmmm. Food for thought here. I spent 27 years with my PD, and got used to smart-asses slamming on the brakes when being signalled to pull over. Technically, anybody who is travelling so close behind another vehicle and can't avoid a collision for ANY reason, is driving negligently - cops included. Cops should be aware of the antics of renegade drivers - especially truckers who delight in this tactic. We call them a "Smidsy" here (Sorry Mate I Didn't See You). Not casting any aspersions on the ST who went down, but there are cowboys amonsgt them as well - worldwide - and many of them need a few close calls as reality checks to wake them up. After all, we're only human. Chris Reeves is no longer with us, so Superman is dead. There are no more.

The truck driver should not have been doing 85 either for that matter. I realize they have to move to make money and get the goods they are delivering to their destination, but I have to get to work every day just like everyone else. This does not give me the right to haul-it down the road.

as a old truck driver i have been pulled over by troopers on m/c the reason they get so close because it is hard to see them in your mirrors , they will move back and forth to be seen in each mirror and after the driver lets them know they have been seen , slowing down or rite sig. the trooper will close up on the rite side to keep the cages from running into the m/c , as one trooper told me , as soon as the trucker starts slowing down the trooper as to watch his own mirrors to make sure a car doe's not run over him , he said he has to trust the truck driver not to try to kill him .

I hope your bud is gonna be ok. Thats a rotten trick to pull on anyone 'specially a biker.

Sometimes ya cant win for losing! (referring to the motions made by bike cops to get the attention of those they are trying to pull over)

But isn't the act of slamming on the brakes in order to evade being pulled over a crime in itself?

i hold our state troopers in mo. in the highest esteem.they are the classiest most respectable officers i have ever done business with.if they say i was in the wrong they are usually right.from the sound of this situation i would have to side with the trooper.hope he has a speedy recovery.bill :)

No what the rascals will do is while being stopped(they have no intention of evasion) they will just jam on the brakes, so if you are not alert you may slam into them.....uh oh!! This is an attempt to put blame on the officer.......works sometimes too, as the officer is at fault if he hits the other vehicle from behind.......people will use this in court to change the tables........I was a Policeman for two years....can you believe that? Yep when I got out of the service that is what they put me to doing......decided I hated the politics of it.......became an hockyoligist.

I should clarify that it was a pick up truck that he was pulling over, not a tractor trailer. He came home today and is slowly getting better. He will be out of work for a little while though, thanks god for sick time and disability.

BTW he was riding a road king, though the VSP also uses BMW's.

I will pass on all the well wishes from the group, Thank you.

If I was driving the pick-up (we call tham utes over here) and slammed on the brakes, my defence in court would be that a child's ball rolled onto the road in front of me and I didn't want to take out a kid if it followed. Or was it the little old lady pulling out in front of me -or was it . . . yadda yadda yadda! I didn't ask for the biker to slam into the back of me. All you gotta do is throw a reasonable doubt for your actions at the courts and you'll pretty well walk away from it scott free. Not taking away from the unfortunate circumstances of the ST crash, we are now into a mini court room scenario of "what ifs" and "maybes". I think we should end it here and now. Obviously the bloke in the pick-up was a goose, so let's hope he's been cooked.

Not exactly true. Cop for 28 years here. The truck driver, or anyone for that matter, can NOT slam on their brakes without justification. Doing so at minimum is reckless driving in VA. with more serious charges possible if you cause injuries.
