Mel Posted May 11, 2010 #1 Posted May 11, 2010 2007 RSV, oil dripping onto floor from one or two of the hoses that drop down just forward of the rear tire. Possible oil overfill? Bike was purchased from a Honda dealer with appx 18,500 miles on it, now has another 1,000 since I bought it. They serviced it. Looks like the sight glass is full when checking oil level. You'd think that those Yamaha engineers could devise an easier, more convenient way to check the oil level on these engines. But then we might also expect fuel injection, C D player, on board air compressor, etc. Mel:Venture:
jlh3rd Posted May 11, 2010 #2 Posted May 11, 2010 are you checking the level in the sight glass with the bike level ?....if you are and the glass is full, ...then you are overfilled.....i believe that would cause your problem...if on the side stand...that's a BIG overfill !
gibvel Posted May 11, 2010 #3 Posted May 11, 2010 Sounds like an over fill to me! Checking the level... Get a little telescoping mirror at an auto parts store and checking it while you're holding the bike level sitting on the seat. I put a brick under the kickstand and that levels the bike pretty well. I get off and, constantly pushing the bike toward the kickstand side, get down and look at the sight glass. But I like the mirror trick the best.
Brake Pad Posted May 11, 2010 #4 Posted May 11, 2010 You Bought the end of an era, they are not making anymore of these. I have the same 2007, I have 43,000 on mine. I've had the same oil leak, from somewhere under the motor for two years. the shop, I bought it from, doesn't think, its a big deal. Nor, do they know how to think at all:doh: But I'm heading out to Texas, next month, and I'm having the bike serviced before leaving, including this, (Don't worry about the little leak thing) Thats covered under warranty. so no cd players, unless you'd like to buy the one that fits in the saddle bag, $700.00 but no up grades unless you do it yourself
BoomerCPO Posted May 11, 2010 #5 Posted May 11, 2010 The scoot takes 3 and 1/2 guarts of oil with a new oil filter. I MEASURE 9 ounces of oil into a measuring cup.....fill up the oil filter and let it set for a few minutes to allow for absorbtion then dump remaining oil into crankcase. I then dump the 3 quarts of oil into the crankcase as well. this brings the oil level to exactly half way on the sight glass. My 06 has never leaked a drop of oil since I started doing this years ago. Boomer.....who sez oil under a scoot is only laughable when ya see the oil under a Harley.
YamaDuck Posted May 11, 2010 #6 Posted May 11, 2010 If you bought it for a Honda dealer they probably don't even know what they sold you. I saw a Royal Star Tour Deluxe at a Honda dealer and inquired about it. When I asked the salesman about the Tour Deluxe he said oh you mean the Venture. I told him I didn't see the Venture where is it. We were talking about the Tour Deluxe and this salesman actually argued with me that it was a Venture. I would not back down so he went to the website and saw I was right and apologized. I didn't by the Tour Deluxe. So they probably overfilled it with oil. Now saying all that there are other possibilities for the oil leak. Believe me when I say this is the voice of experience talking here. The oil leaks I am about to describe all leak in the same general area as the down tube just off a couple of inches at the most. 1) rear shock leaking. This should be easy to detect since the oil would be right under the rear shock. Probably not the cause unless you move the bike before you noticed the oil. 2) leaking middle gear gasket and/or loose middle gear drainage bolt. 3) loose crankcase bolts above the middle gear cover. Oil leaks out while your riding and runs down the back of the engine and drips in the same area as the down tubes just a little behind or to the side of the down tube. I have found all of this on my bike with less than 6000 miles on it. Harry

The level should be appx 1/2 on the sight glass when bike is sitting straight up.
MikeWa Posted May 11, 2010 #8 Posted May 11, 2010 I bought a Clarion Model 625 six CD changer and a c-bus cable off e-bay for a very reasonable price. I mounted the changer vertically in the trunk. The c-bus cable plugs into an open pigtail behind the fairing. The whole thing works from my radio controller. It is a fairly easy install. Snug the changer up tight against the front of the trunk and helmets will still fit. Also a little extra rubber on the mounting screws will help alleviate skipping. Mike

jemorrisonjr Posted May 11, 2010 #10 Posted May 11, 2010 I like this Idea, Will use it next time I change the oil The scoot takes 3 and 1/2 guarts of oil with a new oil filter. Seems like a redundant process (filling the oil filter and then pouring it into the crankcase). Why not just pour 3.5 quarts of oil into the crankcase and be done with it? (I know you have a reason...pls share so all will know)
jlh3rd Posted May 11, 2010 #12 Posted May 11, 2010 i have always filled the oil filters on my cars if they were mounted vertically....this brings oil pressure to the engine almost instantly..instead of waiting for it to fill.......horizontally mounted, i didn't ....

(I know you have a reason...pls share so all will know) I been using that process with oil in the filter for years now....It's just something my Dad taught me when I used to help him in the garage with our family vehicles. :^) Never gave any thought to doing it different....I'm comfortable doing it my way and that's one of the few things I can do and not pooch up the works!! Boomer.....who is resistant to change except when it comes to seeing a gal change her clothes.....
MikeWa Posted May 11, 2010 #14 Posted May 11, 2010 Well if yous guys have never learned to change the oil in your cd changers don' blame me if they skip. And don' over fill them either. Mike

That is the reasoning I was looking for from Boomer ... but from his post, seems he's just doing it coz his dad told him to... (just razzin ya bud) I wonder tho, how a guy manages to mount the horizontal oil filter without drippin oil all over if'n ya put oil in it first? I guess drippin that oil wouldn't qualify for this thread's subject ... or would it?
