SilvrT Posted May 11, 2010 #26 Posted May 11, 2010 What I'm getting at is was/is it a constant chirp no matter where in the range you are? Mine the chirp will start at a certain RPM/speed in a given gear and then disappear when it gets above a certain RPM/speed. Example. When I'm in 4th the chirp will start at about 45 mph. and then will disappear when I reach 55. Then when I shift to 5th it will reappear around 65 and disappear again at about 71 or 72. Or, if I'm cruising along at 50 in 4th and the chirp is present if I back off the throttle a tad the chirp disappears. Then, if I roll on the throttle a bit it's there again. So mine comes and goes depending on where it is in the RPM range. Saw a video on this site the other day where the chirp sound is there all the time. No matter how fast or slow the engine was turning. mine was about the same; however, you will notice some gear whine most of the time but it should be very minimal. Even after swapping to the I basket, I still get some whine/chirp but the volume of it is no where near what it was and it is actually more noticable at a slightly lower rpm. I would say go ahead and get the I basket swap... at least that way you will know if it works or not rather than constantly wonder about it. Get the dealer to hold onto your old basket for a couple weeks and that will give you a chance to go back to it if the I basket is worse. For me, it worked but to be honest, these bikes (or at least this one and a few others I've heard) are just plain noisy, whiney engines compared to a Harley or a Honda or a few others. My son's 1200 Sportster engine is very quiet ... his pipes however are a different story LOL
jfoster Posted May 16, 2010 Author #27 Posted May 16, 2010 Haven't forgot about you guys on the part #. Still waiting on it. Called friday and they're still waiting on a gasket. MAYBE monday, we'll see. Starting to get old. They've had it for almost two and half weeks now. I went by and checked on it the other day, it was a "g" basket that came off it.
jfoster Posted May 17, 2010 Author #29 Posted May 17, 2010 Post the part number they installed from the service ticket (should be on there). I have an 06 Midnight. Per service records from the prior owner mine has had the basket replaced. I ride with a full face helmet and I can hear mine still. I would like to compare mine to those that consider theirs quiet and those that consider them loud. Its definitely worse at some speed and gear combinations than others. Doubt I can get Yamaha to try fixing it again. I have considered pulling it apart just to see what basket is in it. Let us know how you make out. RSTDdog Got it back today (monday), the part # 4XY-16150-09-00. On the ride home, it did seem to be about 70-80% quiter going thru the gears. At 60 mph bout 40% quiter. Which is an improvement. I'm not sure if they put in 20-50 or 10w-40.
