jfoster Posted May 10, 2010 #1 Posted May 10, 2010 I dropped my 06 off last week to have the clutch basket replaced. Concerns: If they said they replace it and they didn't. If its possible to mess something up (inexperienced mechanic). Is there a way other than riding it that would indicate that they actually changed it out? Or anything I should pay attention to? I do plan on requesting to see the one that came out of it. Not sure what I'll be looking at. But, do remember seeing a picture with a small "g" on it. Maybe I'm to skeptical of dealer work...tks

That is clearly stamped on the back of the basket. This one is a "G" ... you should see an "I" instead.
CMIKE Posted May 10, 2010 #3 Posted May 10, 2010 Here is what you look for... Just happend to have one right here...
jfoster Posted May 10, 2010 Author #4 Posted May 10, 2010 Thanks...I'll get it back today or tomorrow and hopefully I'll notice an improvement.
SilvrT Posted May 10, 2010 #5 Posted May 10, 2010 Thanks...I'll get it back today or tomorrow and hopefully I'll notice an improvement. I't a good idea to change oil so that you're "breaking it in" with new oil.
bobbyduck Posted May 10, 2010 #6 Posted May 10, 2010 When I got my 2006 back with the new "I" basket, I could tell the difference just by starting it and blipping the throttle a little bit. But then, I had a really bad "screamer". The new basket knocked about 80% of the noise out, Amsoil another half of what was left. It's there buit I have to listen for it now. No big deal. Good luck!
jfoster Posted May 11, 2010 Author #7 Posted May 11, 2010 Thanks...bout changing the oil. I seems like 06 was bad year for it. My 06 midnite was loud.
RSTDdog Posted May 11, 2010 #8 Posted May 11, 2010 Post the part number they installed from the service ticket (should be on there). I have an 06 Midnight. Per service records from the prior owner mine has had the basket replaced. I ride with a full face helmet and I can hear mine still. I would like to compare mine to those that consider theirs quiet and those that consider them loud. Its definitely worse at some speed and gear combinations than others. Doubt I can get Yamaha to try fixing it again. I have considered pulling it apart just to see what basket is in it. Let us know how you make out. RSTDdog
SilvrT Posted May 11, 2010 #9 Posted May 11, 2010 I have considered pulling it apart just to see what basket is in it. That's exactly what I did... only to find out that they put a G basket in and not an I basket like they were supposed to. I made them correct their "mistake".
Rick Butler Posted May 11, 2010 #10 Posted May 11, 2010 You know guys, The "I" basket (which I don't think has a part number) will only fix the unbearable whine of a "H" basket. Therefore if you have a noisy "F" basket, it should be fixed with a "G" basket. So if you happen to change out a "F" basket with a (cure all) "I" basket you will just go from a primary driven gear that is too tight to one that is too loose? So you really need to know what basket is in your bike before a replacement is ordered. Hope this helps, Rick

Should have it back by Saturday.
Cougar Posted May 11, 2010 #12 Posted May 11, 2010 Rick, My dealer tried that and it did not help they even went backwords as well. the (I) was my only help. and that is not the total fix yet. (THREE) (I) baskets now. Jeff
FreezyRider Posted May 11, 2010 #13 Posted May 11, 2010 Wonder if they make a "J" basket..... I'd try it if they did. My original was an "H" basket.
gibvel Posted May 11, 2010 #14 Posted May 11, 2010 Wonder if they make a "J" basket..... I'd try it if they did. My original was an "H" basket. Thought the "I" basket helped? Would be interesting to see the stats on the different baskets to compare. Be nice to see what tolerances worked best and be able to say "Oh, looks like I need "X" basket" (X being an unknown in this case not an actual basket letter ):

It's not bad now...just a moderate whine where it used to be a "Banshee screech!" But, I'm I am a curious critter at heart. I'd like to see if a higher-lettered basket would make it totally go away....just to satisfy my curious nature.
gibvel Posted May 11, 2010 #16 Posted May 11, 2010 I understand. Since I haven't done a swap out it just seems like a whole lot of work to go through for something that may not make much difference or may actually make it worse. If it's as easy as you guys make it seem then maybe it's worth the effort. Did you have the chirp that just appeared at certain frequencies in the RPM range or did you have to chirp/whine that was present all the time?
SilvrT Posted May 11, 2010 #18 Posted May 11, 2010 The "I" basket (which I don't think has a part number) Rick, I believe there is a part number for the I-basket. I've seen it posted at least a couple times in other threads but I was unable to find it.

Swapping out the basket, if you have the right tools (that being a tool to hold the basket in place while you undo the "big nut") should only take about 30 minutes. You need a torque wrench for tightening that nut. For me at least, the unbearable "whine" would be at certain rpm's and heard the most in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th when running in that specific rpm range. Unfortunately, it was the rpm range a guy would most often be in because dropping a gear, you'd be revving too high and upshifting would be lugging.

I'm pretty good on the highway, going around 70 or 75. But when I'm doing 45 to 55 in 4th the chirp is pretty annoying. I just hesitate to do the swap because I don't want the chirp to end up in the 70 to 75 range on the highway.
FreezyRider Posted May 11, 2010 #23 Posted May 11, 2010 Before changing mine, there was no rpm range I could find where the chirp was not irritating. Fifth gear was the worst, fourth almost as bad. As others have said, it really isn't a bad job at all. The right tools, follow the instructions, and you're done before you know it.

As others have said, it really isn't a bad job at all. The right tools, follow the instructions, and you're done before you know it. What I'm getting at is was/is it a constant chirp no matter where in the range you are? Mine the chirp will start at a certain RPM/speed in a given gear and then disappear when it gets above a certain RPM/speed. Example. When I'm in 4th the chirp will start at about 45 mph. and then will disappear when I reach 55. Then when I shift to 5th it will reappear around 65 and disappear again at about 71 or 72. Or, if I'm cruising along at 50 in 4th and the chirp is present if I back off the throttle a tad the chirp disappears. Then, if I roll on the throttle a bit it's there again. So mine comes and goes depending on where it is in the RPM range. Saw a video on this site the other day where the chirp sound is there all the time. No matter how fast or slow the engine was turning.

In my case, the "I" basket got 'er dun. Good Luck!
