crockettrider Posted May 6, 2010 #1 Posted May 6, 2010 The wife, myself, brother and son have decided to take a trip over into Louisiana. Natchitoches to be exact. We have been several times and have always complained about the hotels being to far from the town center. Well, owning a few vacation rental homes we decided to check into a home. For one night four of us get to stay, 1 block off the square and within easy walking distance of all the food and "bars, The real reason we want to be close!" http://www.vrbo.com/288807 Really, how sweet is that. We usually miss the action and set around a dark dank hotel altering our mental state....now we can pay extra in a bar....with a few additional people. Heading up to Jefferson Texas after and could only find a monster home with a 160' private slide?
RoadKill Posted May 6, 2010 #2 Posted May 6, 2010 My wife and I take an annual MC trip with another couple and we always rent a house/cabin. Much more relaxing and for two couples it really comes out about the same as a nice hotel.
crockettrider Posted May 6, 2010 Author #3 Posted May 6, 2010 It really is surprising how affordable they can be. We were chuffed to be located so close to the events. Our 4th visit and we finally get to enjoy the town.

crockettrider Posted May 6, 2010 Author #5 Posted May 6, 2010 Any recommendations for lodging. We have called the excelsior hotel and they want $169 per night. Per room. Always nice to stay close to the action but that's more than we want to pay. We have stayed off 59 by the liquor store before and that was kinda dumpy.
Dave77459 Posted May 6, 2010 #6 Posted May 6, 2010 My boss loves VRBO. I'll keep it in mind for my next trip. Last time I was in Jefferson, TX, the place was filled with seniors, staying at the B&Bs, they said. Maybe that is an option? When there, hit The Hamburger Store. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2447/4030077527_bf6a6c512b.jpg

Iowawegian Posted May 6, 2010 #8 Posted May 6, 2010 Thanks for the tip! I've never heard of that website and it's exactly what I've been looking for!! Thanks again, Deb

TMJ was starting and it finished it! The best burger i ever had...now you say this one? Ouch! Guess I'll give it a try.
crockettrider Posted May 6, 2010 Author #10 Posted May 6, 2010 If you travel with two or more couples it's hard to beat. We have made offers when it's just the wife and I and often they will take them if you talk well of yourself and leave it clean....don't try all the beds!lol It really can be the way to go. Sometimes I sit and look at all the bargains. My 18 year old is off to college and the wife and I will be trying many more of these deals.
hunter 1500 Posted May 7, 2010 #11 Posted May 7, 2010 Last year the group I go with rented a house in the Catskills NY and there were anywhere from 13 to 17 for the week. Total cost for the house and 7 breakfasts and 4 dinners was $175 and myself and one other guy did the cooking. I was a chef for 30 years and he owned a resturant so we ate well. It made the trip much more affordable. We had a great time and there were always plenty of volenteers to clean up after the meals. I would recomend this type of vacation to anyone. This year we are headed to WV and the house is really nice. Can't wait.
crockettrider Posted May 9, 2010 Author #12 Posted May 9, 2010 We just got in from out trip. The house was just as pictured and a much better deal than the two hotel rooms we got in Jefferson...the Excelsior? (cost twice as much)? We were kicking ourselves for not staying in La another night. Oh well. We noticed there is a fine line between historic hotels and trash...I think the Excelsior was closer to trash. We were pretty disgusted with the west wing.
dunvilsteev Posted June 5, 2010 #13 Posted June 5, 2010 This is the outfit that we use for cottage rentals in the summer. For good deals check the first week of September and on. The first one is the actual cottage we get every Sept and the second URL is the home page if anyone has any interest in that kinda thing. These are private residences that rent for certain weeks of the year, not corporations. Add $110 for insurance and cottage site fee. There are some REAL beauties to look through. http://www.rentcottage.com/showcottage.cfm?cottagenumber=243 dunvilsteevs summer palace http://www.rentcottage.com/ Pick your own
