Ga Dawg Posted May 3, 2010 #1 Posted May 3, 2010 Just changed the oil in the 87 Venture and went for a short ride of about 20 miles. I used Yamalube 4 Stroke 15-40. Got out the driveway sped up and noticed a slight clutch slip in 4th gear. By the time I got back to the house it would barely pull up the smallest hill. The dealer assured me this was the "recommended oil" from Yamaha. Any body had problems like this and these wet clutches? You would think that if it were a Yamaha product it would work. There is no engineers stamp on the back just a stamp that says MA and a circle around it. I know this has been a huge topic here on which oil to use but I figured going with brand specific oil with Yamaha's name on it would be good. What should I do? Thanks!
RandyR Posted May 3, 2010 #2 Posted May 3, 2010 I used Yamalube a couple times in my RSTD and had no clutch problems. I'm running Rotella T now because I can get it easily at Walmart.
dthomso1 Posted May 3, 2010 #3 Posted May 3, 2010 I use Yamalube all the time - there is no reason why it should be responsible for your clutch slipping.
Condor Posted May 3, 2010 #4 Posted May 3, 2010 When was the last time the clutch system was bled?? Sounds like you have a co-incidental problem....
91nwl Posted May 4, 2010 #5 Posted May 4, 2010 Cutch slippage is not uncommon on 1st gens, but it is not the Yamalube that causes it. You probably will need a clutch soon.
RandyR Posted May 4, 2010 #6 Posted May 4, 2010 Earl, member skydoc_17 has some clutch kits in the classified section. I haven't worked on mine yet, but it looks like a relatively easy 2hr job.

It wasn't the oil. A couple possible things have occured since it's heat related and got worse the longer you rode. The expansion hole in the reserve is plugged up. The DOT 3 needs to be changed. The reserve is over full. Take care of those items and the clutch will return to normal. My 2¢
Ga Dawg Posted May 5, 2010 Author #8 Posted May 5, 2010 Thanks to all that have given advise. I am going to try a Barnett clutch plate from Buckeye Performance along with a new slave cyl. I will let you know what happens. Thanks!
