jryan Posted April 28, 2010 #1 Posted April 28, 2010 For those of you with a modular helmet AND headsets...any problems with radio or intercom because of wind noise? I've always worn a full face & just bought a set of HJC Symax II modular helmets. I knew modulars had more wind noise than a fullface, but after a test ride tonight in 20mph breeze, there's quite a bit more noise...so much in fact that I'm wondering if installing new J&M headsets is going to give decent results or be a waste of time. I'm guessing others out there are using a similar setup successfully but just wanted to verify while I can still return the helmets for refund if I choose.
TDunc Posted April 28, 2010 #2 Posted April 28, 2010 I took two small blocks of foam rubber and cut them to fit in the area beside the ears. I did not make them thick enough to touch my ear but close. Then I mounted the Velcro to hold my speaker on this foam. This solved my problem by decreasing the noise and moved the speakers much closer to my ear.
mrc Posted April 28, 2010 #3 Posted April 28, 2010 Before I bought the headset the radio was at 18 to 21. Then I picked up a head set for the open face helmet and the volume control was reduced to 12 to 14. I just got a Nolan N103 and it works like a charm, now it is down around 5 or 6. This tells me the background noise is substantially lower.
Yeah, Just Dale Posted April 28, 2010 #4 Posted April 28, 2010 ... between full face and modular IMHO. Have a Shoei full face (RFR?) and an HJC IS-MAX modular. I guess the modular is a little bit noisier but that could be because from different manufacturers. Have used IMC headsets for years on a Valkyrie and they're fine. Less expensive than the J&M and as I say work like a charm. I bought another set for the Venture when I got it and have been riding with it about month. City, highway, works fine. Occaisionally have to turn up the volume a bit at highway speeds over and above the automatic volume increase tied to speed. Not blasting by any stretch of the imagination. I like the modular helmets in terms of getting them on and off while wearing glasses, being able to flip one open to take a drink at a stop without removing the whole thing, etc. I think any headset will work fine with a modular helmet. May have to be a little creative with running wires if you don't go with a boom mic.
