massey130 Posted April 26, 2010 #1 Posted April 26, 2010 I am in the market for a pair of chaps. while i can make my own, i have too much going on right now and have some leather work sitting in wait, so that really won't happen. who makes a good set? i would like a thick leather, but would like the input of folks who have been there and done that. I have some riding pants, but i wind up with jeans, grab my riding jacket and helmit. so i am going to go the chap route. if they are unisex as they seem, i will probably get a pair for Deb as well. i need to go to bed, so i will check this thread tomorrow (today really). well, i will check it later - Ok? and, thanks for the input. I appreciate it.
YoungBlood Posted April 26, 2010 #2 Posted April 26, 2010 Hey Massey, I'm brand new to the site, but I saw your topic and thought I could help. I buy about 90% of my leather from Milwaukee. From boots to my jacket, almost everything I have came from them. Their prices aren't the absolute cheapest you'll find, but the leather is rugged and durable (especially if you take care of yours like I do mine, saddle soap is your friend!) I included a link to the pair of chaps I have. http://www.mmccleather.com/milwaukee-gunslinger-motorcycle-chaps.html
Motorcycle Mike Posted April 26, 2010 #3 Posted April 26, 2010 Ain't non better than Fox Creek Leather. Pricey, but worth every penny. http://www.foxcreekleather.com/
T.J. Posted April 26, 2010 #4 Posted April 26, 2010 www.Leatherup.com This place has 50% on stuff right now. I and my son have ordered from them a number of times. Good place.
Monty Posted April 26, 2010 #5 Posted April 26, 2010 It's best if you go try it on in person first. I never order leather or jackets online, because sizes run so different between manufacturers. I also don't like dealing with the hassle of returning and exchanging, with shipping and all. Find you a good leather or biker shop, and try some on.
The Marshal Posted April 26, 2010 #6 Posted April 26, 2010 I have a set of UNIK chaps. They are very heavy, and they come with a removable quilted liner that works awesome in freezing weather. Highly recommend them. ~Bill
Dave77459 Posted April 26, 2010 #7 Posted April 26, 2010 I bought my wife "shin chaps" at a rally, then she bought me a pair for Christmas. They work great for me in our southern climate. The raised part at the knee blocks the wind mostly from my thighs. The only time I missed the upper leather was when I rode with temperatures in the lower 30s. I *love* how convenient they are. Quick on and off, and extremely comfortable. They pack very easily in the saddlebags, with room to spare. My full chaps are awkward, uncomfortable, and fill the saddlebag when off. And I feel like a poser motorcycle cowboy. Ugh. I'll wear them again when I get a set of spurs. My $0.02. slick97spirit Posted April 26, 2010 #8 Posted April 26, 2010 Whichever brand you buy, just make sure they're lined. Makes for much easier on and off.
jburrell Posted April 26, 2010 #9 Posted April 26, 2010 www.Leatherup.com This place has 50% on stuff right now. I and my son have ordered from them a number of times. Godlover Posted April 26, 2010 #10 Posted April 26, 2010 I looked all over on the internet and ended up at my local farm supply store and got a nice enough set.
massey130 Posted April 26, 2010 Author #11 Posted April 26, 2010 I looked all over on the internet and ended up at my local farm supply store and got a nice enough set. Farm supply? i would believe that in some larger places in certain states, but in Louisiana, the farm supplies I have been to don't go that far with inventory. so far, Leatherup is the top bidder on my purchase list. I wouldn't mind local, but day time is prime time, so that won't happen. I will be glad when i get some things out of the way. great advice so far. i thank everyone who has given me direction in chap quest 101. the knee boots are nice, but my personal taste says they seem to look better on female riders. Just me, though, to each his own. If i missed something so far, let me know as i have not plunked down any payments yet.
hig4s Posted April 26, 2010 #12 Posted April 26, 2010 We have a local shop here called Leather Lady,, they have good chaps for $99, tailored. I very seldom wear chaps, but Mary and I each have a pair for the occasions when going a short distance but it is a little chilly out. Going longer distances we both have full riding pants.
massey130 Posted April 26, 2010 Author #13 Posted April 26, 2010 are there 2 kinds of lined chaps? 1. lined with a material that makes it easy to put on & take off? 2. lined with a quilty material that keeps you warm when it is cold outside? is there a 3rd kind that has a removable warm weather liner?

massey130 Posted April 26, 2010 Author #15 Posted April 26, 2010 they must have a bunch of stuff to have those boots. either that or harley is moving a lot of material everywhere to get word out and have walking advertisements.

I bought these cause i could try them on. No regrets, comfortable to boot. I wouldnt worry about ordering from leatherup either. I have gotten a jacket from them. I had to exchange for a larger size. Other than that it is a well made jacket. I will order from them again, can save some major bucks. Hope this helps
NewfoundlandVenture Posted April 27, 2010 #17 Posted April 27, 2010 I bought mine from Jafrum.com.... don't really know how these compare to others on price or quality, but I've been satisfied. I'm on my 4th riding season with them, and haven't had any issues... I got a lined pair, and they are easy to put on, and provide good wind and temperate protection. Up here in Newfoundland, temperature protection is important!
Ride2much Posted April 27, 2010 #18 Posted April 27, 2010 I had mine custom made, I do not like the Harley look so mine are brown and western cut. Matches my brown jacket..Advice: always get them two inches longer than you think fit.you can always cut them off below the last snap.
rod Posted April 27, 2010 #19 Posted April 27, 2010 Who knows why bikers started wearing chaps? Answer to follow if you don't know. Rod
Freebird Posted April 27, 2010 #20 Posted April 27, 2010 I know. Do you want me to answer or wait and see who else knows.
hig4s Posted April 27, 2010 #21 Posted April 27, 2010 I don't know, but my guess would be back in the early 1900s people who rode motorcycles just wore the same clothes they would have wore when riding a horse.
csogbk Posted April 27, 2010 #22 Posted April 27, 2010 I highly recomend Battlefield Leathers in historic Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. They will fit and tailor your chaps while you wait! I've had a $99 pair for 3 years with no percievable wear. http://www.battlefieldleathersinc.com/products.nxg
The Black Pearl Posted April 27, 2010 #23 Posted April 27, 2010 Got mine on ebay about a hundred bucks but there are GREAT!! Very nice lining, thin and smooth for easy on and off and comes with a zip in quilted liner that keeps me warm and toasty and have been riding at 19 degs and they kept me very warm. Now I am having them tailored more to me but thats only gonna run me 25 bucks at the local stich shop, great people there "schribers stich shop" in traverse city mi. ebay store: http://stores.ebay.com/CELIBI-LEATHER
rod Posted April 27, 2010 #24 Posted April 27, 2010 Go ahead freebird, looks like no nobody wants to guess. Rod
Freebird Posted April 27, 2010 #25 Posted April 27, 2010 OK...well I'm not 100% sure on the details but it had something to do with the oiling systems on the old bikes. They used some kind of splash system or something and the chaps kept the oil off the riders pants. At least I THINK that is what I read somewhere long ago.
