shifter adjustment problem

The shifter lost the lock down screw and slid off the splines on my 84 Venture. I pushed it back on and got another nut. I put it in neutral and adjusted the shift rod until the light came on. When I tried riding it, I would have to stomp it hard to go into first. When I parked, the neutral light would not come on again. I would see it blink as I passed through to second. I tried the adjust twice more and each time, it would lose the light after shifting through the gears and first was still tricky. The Yamaha Service manual is no help. Any ideas OH GURUS of the TRIPPLE TUNNG FORKS?

Sometimes there is a punch mark on the end of the shaft where the shift lever attaches.

 

Line up this punch mark with the slot in the shift lever.

 

Note the orientation of lever is towards bottom.

 

It is possible to install towards top, but shift pattern is reversed. Don't ask me how I know this.
