dunvilsteev Posted April 21, 2010 Share #1 Posted April 21, 2010 Actually one leads to the other ..... Does it do any harm to pull the clutch and start in first gear and subsequently, does it do any harm to leave it parked in gear so it doesn't roll on a hill??? ctraylor Posted April 21, 2010 Share #2 Posted April 21, 2010 Nope, I do it all the time. We don't have emergency brakes on these things.......

bongobobny Posted April 22, 2010 Share #4 Posted April 22, 2010 I agree!! Actually leaving it in gear when parked is a desired thing, and as far as starting in gear, the only downside is you can not start the bike with the kickstand down, I think... BoomerCPO Posted April 22, 2010 Share #5 Posted April 22, 2010 I do it all the time with my Venture. It keeps the bike from rolling away when ya turn yer back.....Don't ask me how I know that. :^( It also gives a good check on the kickstand safety switch. Boomer....who thinks its more fun watching the Harleys get away from their owners....and renting out pygmies to help them catch the darn bike. Snaggletooth Posted April 22, 2010 Share #6 Posted April 22, 2010 Park in 1st all the time. Just for the safety of the bike. Ain't gonna start with the stand down anyway. As far as a stupid question........ain't no such thing here. Everybodys learning curve should have a bend in it sometime.
dunvilsteev Posted April 22, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted April 22, 2010 thanks guys.... Reason I asked is it "sounds" different when started in first versus neutral. Paranoid Pete here .....
DragonRider Posted April 22, 2010 Share #8 Posted April 22, 2010 Same subject.......................Leave it parked in gear.
MiCarl Posted April 22, 2010 Share #9 Posted April 22, 2010 Reason I asked is it "sounds" different when started in first versus neutral. ..... It might. Even with the clutch pulled there is still a little drag. Probably doesn't spin quite as fast as in neutral.
BigBoyinMS Posted April 22, 2010 Share #10 Posted April 22, 2010 The only negative to starting in gear is the extra torque needed to break the clutches apart and spin the extra weight. If the bike is still warm from a run then it isn't that bad. If it's cold then it can really put a load on the starter.
