So I rode my bike to work yesterday... A little chilly in the morning, but gorgeous on the way home... Even took the long way home. (20 mile detour.)

Right before I got home, I stopped to top off the tank, and reset the trip meter (as I always do) then it happened...

I turned the key back on, and switched back from trip to Odometer and WTF?!?!?!

MY MILEAGE IS RESET TO ZERO!

Now, my bike is clean, but not THAT clean! I checked to make sure it wasn't some fluke, and that I wasn't reading the trip meter, when I got home, I reset the trip again, and sure enough I have 3 miles on my bike now. Great. I already have a company that will fix it for $55 if I ship it to them with a bunch of paperwork, and that's what I had to do the last time, (yeah it has happened before) but I want to make sure it doesn't happen again.

As a computer tech, my only thoughts are that somehow something is grounding out, or had voltage sent to it in a bad way that might have reset some type of EEPROM that holds the mileage. I hate to replace the ENTIRE wiring harness, but I guess I don't have much of a choice, unless it's something in the gauge cluster? Any thoughts? Maybe I should just buy another cluster instead? I don't want to just let it keep resetting, I'm not fond of felony fraud.

So that is an interesting issue you are having.

As long as you keep paperwork and track of each time it happens and keep up with your records and fully disclose where necessary - I seriously doubt that you'll have an issue with any type of 'odometer' fraud claims.

The 'fraud' implies that there is some intent to deceive, etc etc. And by you going through the effort to get it fixed once, and maintaining the actual mileage records I think it would be a pretty big stretch for a prosecutor to 'prove' beyond a reasonable doubt that you willfully and intentionally 'reset' your odometer with an intent to deceive.

Now, on the note that you just want it to work correctly, I would be in the same position you are - I'd want to get it fixed, correctly and be done with it.

As for possible sources to the problem I think you've got it pretty much nailed; must be a short to ground or surge happening somewhere. Or if there is some internal backup battery mechanism that supplies a constant power supply to whatever memory module is responsible for maintaining the odometer that has run its life course in the years of ownership... :confused24:.

My TRIP odometers will occasionally reset it self (if my bike sits for several days without running), but never the actual odometer itself.

I found a new speedo from Pinwall, but the damn odometer on that one is broken! Arrgh.

If I remember correctly (and at my young age, that can be questioned) a year or so back someone else was having that same problem. I think the cause turned out to be an issue with the ignition switch.

Someone else with a better recollection than I may be able jump in here and correct me if I am wrong about this.

You're not as long as you tell the next owner. WV has a place on the title to check if the odometer reading is correct or not.... :2cents:

How old is the battery ? If the battery is getting tired, and you hit the ignition switch, the bike starts but the trip odometers will reset.

Also if the bike has sat for a while the battery drains and same thing happens.

This may be the problem.

I think this is something Yamaha might take care of even out of warranty. I doubt the dealer would agree, but I would try talking directly to the company. Might not get anywhere but I would try. Regarding the ignition switch, I had one go out on my RSV and lots of things were effected but not the odometer. You can take the battery out and it doesn't even effect it.

Good luck.

Had to replace my cluster on my 07 RSTD because of the reset button quit working, when they installed the new cluster they did not set my mileage. I brought in a bike with 26,000 miles on it and left with a new one one with 0 miles. I asked the dealership about it and they said they couldn't reset the new one to match the old mileage :confused07:. This makes me kinda of leary about recommending someone to buy a used one. I know this doesn't really help with the problem in the post just wanted to let you know what the dealership told me about resetting mileage.

i'll sent you mine off my 97 and see if it reset it, if it does just send it back and i'll have a new no millage 97 royal!! i do have a wrecked 96 with 5700 miles on it but i want to keep it with the motor as i'm going to put it into my 97 that has a bad motor.just keep up with the millage and record it and where the dealer replaced it. if you sell it just pass that on to the next owner. the law is for those who purposilly set out to cheat you by resetting the odometer.

One of the wires was grounding out. I got it sealed back up, and the mileage miraculously came back!

Then I got rid of the bike.
