on the 1st gen , are the mikes allways on , how do i use the ptt buttems , do they only work for the cb ?

On the 2nd gen's the ptt is for the cb, not so sure on the 1st gen.

On 1st gens, intercom mics are always on, if plugged in, of course.

However, volume control also works for intercom system.

At bottom of stereo, is the "Headphones" button.

 

The PTT button is for the CB only.

Just to clarify what Popeye said, the intercom volume is separate from the cb or radio volume. It's control is the right hand knob below the radio. It doesn't turn off but if you turn it all the way down it's as good as off.

The headphone button, between the two volume controls, switches between all sound in the speakers or all sound in the headphones.
