We have a 2005 Midnight Venture just purchased and am wondering how you folks lift the bike for routine service without a factory center stand? This is our first motorcycle in 19 years and all prior had factory center stands. I have a hydraulic lift table but would like to have a way to have both tires free of the ground.

Thanks,

Rob

Center stands off of older Yamahas will work with a slight mod (bracket).

I need one also.

Don't think it's gonna lift both tires off of the ground though. I need so oil level can be checked with only one person.

Rob,This link is what most of us use here..I thought about a center stand but it DOES NOT get the wheel offhe ground..This stand is the best thing you can buy for getting the Venture off the ground SAFELY to service it. I just wish I would not have waited 4 years to buy it as I use it weekly just for good cleanings on the bike.. http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=2673&title=carbon-one-freestanding-lift-adapter&cat=7 Hope you join up..You will find the $12.00 the best you have ever spent,we hold maintenance days meet n eats and just Help each other when in need....no matter where you are in the country! Welcome,Tom

Hi Tom, and Joe, and thanks for the responses. My wife and I plan to see a little "road time" this summer visiting the Grand Canyon, and a few other smaller places. This bike we purchased is low miles, (9850) and runs well, so we are confident it will fit the bill.

I do plan to join the group as this seems to be a very nice bunch of folks from the limited amount I've read. We are located in central Illinois near major interstates, and can offer support to anyone having trouble. Always have a trailer and my auto body shop has ample room to be out of the weather to facilitate repairs. Not to make a pitch for myself but I am a competent painter and can offer assistance/advice on the cosmetic end of keeping these motorcycles up to par.

Really appreciate the link for the stand. I may make something that could remain permanent mounted, but I'm too new at this right now. I like to have the weight off wheels over any storage time although I'm not a "fair weather" rider only. About 25 degrees is my limit, depending on distance, (at least used to be. LOL).

Thanks,

Rob

Welcome to the site, first off! as you work on the bike, you will find a permanent bracket for lifting you bike will be combersome. the lift adapter mentioned is worth its weight. you can go thru a bunch of motions to find what so many of us here have already been through.

the center stand mod is on the site. you will need parts though and this only lets you set the bike up straight. I use a rough cut piece of 2 by 4 that measures 2 by 4 that i put under the side kick stand. it is enough that i can check my oil within a close enough to a level check.

and it is so close to level, that i can teeter tooter the bike to level if need be.

Like tom and others, my lift adapter gets used. being in the business of using tools, you know there are some shortcuts that just aren't worth it. :thumbsup2:

Rob,

I have a Freebird Centerstand I will sell if you want a "mounted stand". It will lift the rear wheel off the ground by about an inch if you have stock suspension. If the levelling links are installed, it won't lift the tire off the ground. You could put a 1 X 4 under the stand to make it clear. I liked it for oil changes, cleaning the bike and to provide a little more clearance around the bike in the garage. I haven't used it in awhile, so I took it off.

Don't be fooled by the occasionally available cheap rip off of Larry's design either.

I've had my bike up on this stand several times now (many more than I had expected that I would use it for) because it is so easy to use. With the legs on it, the thing is QUITE sturdy. As others have mentioned, I must agree that my only regret with this is that I didn't buy one sooner.

Welcome to the site - we have a handful of members in your area too so keep an eye out for the meet and eats and meet and rides if you want to meet some other great people. :thumbsup2:

If you’re mechanically inclined and can weld, you can adapt this center stand to the Venture. Both the Vulcan and the Venture have tabs on the frame to attach a center stand. The only difference is the Venture’s tabs are narrower than the Vulcan’s tabs. Here’s a link with plans.

So what I don't get is....how do you get the bike up to be able to use this stand?

i agree with the carbon one lift. squidley has let me use his and it's great.i would also buy the legs(stands) so you can remove the lift. but this is for use at home not on a road trip. i have left my bike on a sears bike lift for over 3 weeks and haven't had a issue with it. if any one wants a 1'st gen centerstand i have one that's not moded it's just hanging on the wall in the garage.

To use the stand we use a Motorcycle lift that you slid under the bike from the side that has 2 arms that extenoutward. With the stand under the bike witout the legs the bike come straight up and it is very stable. I use mine even for washing my bike and cleaning my WWW tires. Being able to have the bike up and be very stable can be valuable as well as having the ability to work on items without bending over all the time. If you have a lift that your ride the bike up on you have a different kind of "lift". Ours you can get at Sears or where I got my "Harbor Freight Tools. I paid $59 for mine when I got it at Harbor Freight Tools on sale.

I wouldnt work without it now.

The lift adapter allows one to use a typical motorcycle/ATV jack to actually get it in the air.

In post 25 of:

I show a couple of shots with the jack under it (after I installed the legs).

You you do a little more searching, I am pretty sure that there are others that have pictures with jacks under the bikes too.

What you'll notice is that that there are some engine components that stick down below the frame pieces so the lift adapter allows the jack to exert the force on the frame instead of the other exposed components, to lift the bike.

Hope that clarifies it for you.

Edit: Oops, JB already answered your question. Sorry for the double post.

to add what James said, you put the lift adapter on the bike and then the jack (lift) is used as james states. once up, you put the legs on the adapter. lower the bike till it sits on the legs and move the actual lift (jack) out of the way.

go to the classifieds section and look for the Carbon One lift adapter. its picture is worth so many words.

Thanks. So I need to get another floor jack. Hmmm. Running out of room.

Sadly there really isn't much other option.

There has been some discussion of the Pit-bull jack (I think that is what it is called). I believe they have an adapter that is included, that allows these bikes to be lifted in a safe manor (for the bike and for the steadiness/sturdiness/stability of working on them).

I have seen videos, and there are posts of videos around here, of how stable those jacks are - but they are quite pricey as well.

I don't think Larry's stand/adapter will work with any centerstand. The Carbon One stand and centerstands us the same attachment points.
