nickle Posted April 12, 2010 #1 Posted April 12, 2010 i bought a 84 virago for a good price. but buying parts are high. got a gas tank and new keys. but having a time finding a starter, any ideas other than buying a new one. which is in the high four hunderd range. just going to ride it around home. so don.t have to ride venture . been fun restoring it so far.
MiCarl Posted April 12, 2010 #2 Posted April 12, 2010 Are you sure it needs a starter? If it sounds like it's grinding marbles it's probably the starter clutch (very common in early Viragos). If it is the starter it's likely repairable.
nickle Posted April 12, 2010 Author #3 Posted April 12, 2010 the starter got with it is broke and in pieces
camos Posted April 12, 2010 #4 Posted April 12, 2010 This thread describes the best 1st gen Virago starter fix which is essentially changing the left side case to a 2nd gen so the newer starter will fit. Many Virago parts are interchangeable between years and models but not all of them are compatible so it is important to give the year and displacement when asking a question. ViragoTech is a very good forum with a lot of knowledgeable people to ask questions relating to those bikes.
rod Posted April 12, 2010 #5 Posted April 12, 2010 What Clive said. Check at Virago tech for starter and parts. Good guys and very helpful. I have a 83 500 Virago and a 98 1100 great bikes. Keep the battery charged and the starter is not a problem. Good luck Rod
