Harmonicashawn Posted April 8, 2010 #1 Posted April 8, 2010 Can anyone tell me the stock temp for a first gen VR? I'm thinking that the P.O. put in a colder one. There should be an optimal temp for this motor and I'm thinking that the factory knows best! In my experience with muscle cars- a colder thermostat= less power and higher fuel consumption. Many people (including myself have made this mistake). Thanks--Shawn
GigaWhiskey Posted April 8, 2010 #2 Posted April 8, 2010 I think it is 180 but if the PO put a colder one in, I can understand why. The temp gauge can scare the pee out of you when in traffic. I went through this for a while and the best recommendation I got was to put some tape over the guage. Do some more searching on this (temp thermostat) to dig in this a bit deeper. use some more search keywords related to this as well.
GeorgeS Posted April 8, 2010 #3 Posted April 8, 2010 I would simple replace the Anti Freez solution, Install a new Stock Thermo ( Replace Both Gaskets !!! yes there are 2 ) ( Be very carfull not to Over torque the two bolts that hold the PVC material cover on the thermostate ) If you deform it, it will leak. If its still reading High, I would suspect the Sending Unit, out of calibration. I have never had an overheat problem on my 89, even at 110 deg. outside air temp.

I have cooked my nuts at that outside temp on this bike.
dingy Posted April 8, 2010 #5 Posted April 8, 2010 I just replaced the thermostat in my 1983 bike with a automotive style unit. Murray Plus+, P/N 3758, I bought it at O'Reilly parts store. www.oreillyauto.com This was a 180 degree unit. It came with a rubber ring around flange that needed to be removed to fit into housing, otherwise it was a perfect fit. Price was $4.99. Gary
