YamaDuck Posted April 7, 2010 Share #26 Posted April 7, 2010 I just don't buy the 5th gear is for 65+. OK, IF you want near full throttle acceleration, or are hauling a full load up a hill.... ok, but otherwise, I am in 5th a lot running 40-50 or so, as long as I am just puttin' along and the engine is happy. Rpm's are well above 2500 or so, and you won't lug any engine with that many revs. To truly lug an engine, you need to be down near 1500 or less and give it a lot of throttle. I have ridden new 6 speed Harley's and many of those owners say never use 6th till over 70! I ran the bike in the 50's and it was just fine, no excessive shake, and no lugging, again, to lug you need very low rev's, and if you drive in whatever the top gear is with reasonable throttle, you won't hurt anything, and you will get better MPG. Revving high every shift may be fun, but it becomes tiresome for me on most trips, and expensive as the MPG drops a lot! But each to his or her own. I have cruised at 35 in 5th however if I give it much throttle I all it will buck and shake it's way up until the speed gets fast enough to smooth it out. If I give it a lot of throttle you better hang on because it will shake you to pieces. Both of my Ventures do this. "and you will NEVER hit the rev limiter in 4th. I'm topped mine out in 5th gear and then downshifted to 4th and picked up more speed. These bikes will actually run faster in 4th than they will in 5th." I have only actually hit the rec limiter once and I think I was up around 90 in third.

Freebird Posted April 8, 2010 Share #28 Posted April 8, 2010 I don't know how. There must be something different in your bike and mine.
buddy Posted April 8, 2010 Share #29 Posted April 8, 2010 First time I really FULLY tested the 83 Venture I had. Was riding with a friend of mine he has the 03 VTX1800 Honda. We left from a dead stop he got the jump on me but once I hit second gear he was history. I gave the motor full throttle and let it loose,he said he could see day light under the front tire when I went by him. He never thought a touring bike could do that. These XVZ1300 motors LOVE it when you let them have FULL THROTTLE....... Oh the 83 had no rev. limiter either...Sure do miss that bike... Now my RSTD I have now can move on out as well, BUT I find the rev. Limiter is keeping this motor from being what its best known .........................THE BEAST........................ When you let this motor have full throttle you will soon find out why their called the "Bullet Proof Motor".. the more throttle you give it the more it wants!!!! Find you a long straightaway and let it loose, you Wont hurt the motor one bit!!! Heck it will be begging you for more throttle....... I guarantee it..........
