BCLII Posted April 5, 2010 #1 Posted April 5, 2010 Looking to remove the strip of vinyl on my 06 venture gas tank. Is this a big job? looks like a lot of glue, but a heat gun should do it. I'm going to be putting on or replacing it with a Hopnel tank bib tux with pouch. I don't want it to sit to high off the tank. Also will the black plastic upper tank piece(around the ignition) fit tight enough without the stock vinyl. thanks:think:

I did the same to my 06.
Sling Posted April 5, 2010 #3 Posted April 5, 2010 Like Bob said no big deal to get the vinyl off. Mine had doubleface tape that had to be removed. I took some of the door edge trim and applied it to the edge around the plastic piece to make it fit just a little tighter. Hope you can see it in the photo.
BCLII Posted April 5, 2010 Author #4 Posted April 5, 2010 Sling, what brand of tank bib do you have on your bike?
Sling Posted April 6, 2010 #5 Posted April 6, 2010 I got the Yamaha Royal Star venture / Tour Delux Baja Tank Bib Item # 320362544544 from Troy Savoie I got the one with the pocket in it his Email address is troysavoie@cfl.rr.com He's located in Cocoa, Florida
waterbug Posted April 8, 2010 #6 Posted April 8, 2010 I took mine off of my 08 its not hard its just two sided tape on it, YOu can take a razor blad if you are careful and cut the tape without scratching the tank or cutting the bib or put some heat on it to help soften the glue but remember you have a fuel tank so dont use any open flame and make sure the cap is on. Then you can use some wax and grease remover to get the tape off of the tank with some elbow grease. Just takes some time good luck!
dunvilsteev Posted April 8, 2010 #7 Posted April 8, 2010 If I wasn't going to replace the rubber with a bib would you still recommend doing it? I guess what I'm asking is does the rubber thing have a use and by having a bare tank I'll have problems? Does the sun fade the colour so that if I removed it there would be a strip of different colour paint? Thanks.

I believe the only purpose for the vinyl is to break up and/or add lines of character to that big tank.

Not sure about the fade, I took mine off my 07 right away and have just left it bare paint, like most bikes. I don't have a pic that shows it handy.
Uturn Posted April 18, 2010 #10 Posted April 18, 2010 Been awhile, but think what I did was take some of mono fishing line, slipped it under the bib at the seat and sawed it forward toward the front. Then I used something (maybe WD40) to clean the sticky left on; then waxed the tank before putting the bib on. I wanted to keep the holder for the cord connection, but ended up buying a new one from the dealer. Seems like the stick-on tape on the new holder was better than replacement tape for the old holder. Best of luck on your upgrade. MIKE aka Uturn
hig4s Posted April 18, 2010 #11 Posted April 18, 2010 I actually removed the intercom cord holder too, and rerouted it up on the handlebars just under the stereo controls.
OutKast Posted April 19, 2010 #12 Posted April 19, 2010 I completely removed the bibb also. But on my 04 white, you can see the tank seam through the paint. This has been reported on other colors also. But does not bother me, and nobody has ever commented on it.
