Dave3 Posted March 30, 2010 #1 Posted March 30, 2010 I planning a trip to leave ATL 4/12, I'll head up to Charlotte for lunch and stop in Roanoke, Va for the night. 4/13 will take me to Scranton, Pa for lunch, then to my Brother's house in Penn Yan, NY by dinner. Anybody in Roanoke and Scranton that can give me the good food low down, Like a regional favorite at the local diner? Any regional info would be great. Thanks
Blackjack Posted March 30, 2010 #2 Posted March 30, 2010 Heck, Dave, if you're going to Maintenance Day you might as well leave from there! It will save you about 200 miles, 4 hours and the gas that goes with it! Just a thought... TERRY
Dave3 Posted March 30, 2010 Author #3 Posted March 30, 2010 Sure would help, but it puts me on the road a little early. Sunday with the family. Not sure yet about heading to Steve's. I'm about 1500mi shy of oil/Filter, but might go ahead and change them anyway. I think I'm gonna switch to Amsoil or Mobil 1 Syn. Any thoughts?
KiteSquid Posted March 30, 2010 #4 Posted March 30, 2010 Sense you are going to be in the area, look at the road from Buckhanon Virginia to the Blue Ridge Parkway..... LOTS of twists and elevation change. RVs are prohibited...... Get off I81 at exit 168 drive through Buckhanon to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Go north on the Blue Ridge Parkway, ride one exit and go west on state route 618 Get back on I81 and head north....... Oh you might want to eat at the Pink Cadalac Diner neare Natural Bridge VA. Dave3 Posted March 30, 2010 Author #5 Posted March 30, 2010 Thanks Squid, That sounds a lot more fun than just staying on 81.
mike_kelly_68 Posted March 30, 2010 #6 Posted March 30, 2010 I grew up in the Scranton area and from what I remember all the good eats are quite away off the interstate. If you continue north for about an hour to Hallstead/Greatbend there is pretty good spot right off the interstate call Dobb's Country Kitchen. You would get off and turn left go to the "T" and it will be across the road to the left (if its still there!) Good diner food the Beaver next door is pretty good also. http://maps.google.com/maps/place?oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=dobbs+hallstead+pa&fb=1&gl=us&hq=dobbs&hnear=hallstead+pa&cid=4078267871682015654 http://www.yelp.com/biz/dobbs-country-kitchen-hallstead
PBJ Posted March 30, 2010 #7 Posted March 30, 2010 Hey Dave this is PB&J from the Finger lakes area, of which Penn Yan is dead smack in the middle. Not sure if you were originally from this area. Keuka Lake where your brother lives has one of the most beautiful roads to ride in this area. Then there's the ride through Little Italy Valley over to Canandaigua Lake and the Village of Naples. Heading north from there takes you to Canandaigua where I now live You can call me at 315-521-3729. We have a great bunch of Venture Riders here in this part of New York and we'd love to show you some of the good roads and great food in our area. I'm retired so I'm free most of the time and I'd love to show you around. I'm also a Limo driver and i can take you to some of the wine trails here in New York which are growing by leaps and bounds. Hope to hear from you. Phil.
cecdoo Posted March 30, 2010 #8 Posted March 30, 2010 I am in SE PA Dave, if you are coming my way let me know, we can meet for coffee or lunch? I am about 2hrs south of Scranton. Craig
bongobobny Posted March 30, 2010 #9 Posted March 30, 2010 We're a bit west from where you will be, but will be glad to meet up on a weekend with you if I learn how to drive the new trike...

Hi Dave, I haven't used either oil but I have heard a lot of good things about both. I use Rotella myself and it works great also. The reason a lot of people switch for Amsoil I hear is the cost. However it is a motorcycle motor oil from what I understand. Mobil 1 and Rotella are not motorcycle motor oils but both work great. There are several oil filters you can use also. I use the one from Wal Mart for $2.83 and it is made by the same company that makes some of the top brand names. Some people have a problem putting a $2.83 oil filter on there bike and I understand that. Anyway just some info for you none of which is first hand except the Rotella. Harry

Dave3 Posted April 6, 2010 Author #18 Posted April 6, 2010 I'm going to take I-81 into Harrisburg, then head straight North on US 11 / US 15. Anybody have any info on this route & good food in Harris burg area?
nyjerry Posted April 6, 2010 #19 Posted April 6, 2010 Route 15 is a very good way to travel. Most of it has been redone to four lanes now. I would take rt 15 over rt 81 anyday. After you get off rt 15 take rt 86 east to corning and pickup rt 414 north to walkins glen. Then rt 14 north to you see the signs for Pen yan. If you need anything while up here give a yell and I'll see what I can do. Nyjerry
cecdoo Posted April 6, 2010 #20 Posted April 6, 2010 Yep what Jerry said, Harrisburg can be congested depending when you go thru, 15n before and after Harrisburg is a nice ride. Dont really know of any special food joint. Craig

Dave3 Posted April 21, 2010 Author #25 Posted April 21, 2010 Needless to say the trip was very eventful, good and Bad. The good was I rode the Blue Ridge Pkwy for about 80 miles into Roanoke. It was very peaceful and beautiful. Unfortunately, the next day I got about 25 miles north of Roanoke on I-81 only to get a 2" screw in my brand new E3 rear tire. The bike started to fishtail @ 60 mph, I was able to slow to about 20 mph as the fishtail got worse. As soon as I crossed the Rough Strip on the shoulder the bike laid down on the right side. Luckily, there was no guardrail, just grass. I was wearing Leather Chaps & Jacket, they took the force and the road rash. As well as my helmet getting several gashes. I walking away with bruised ribs and a couple scrapes. The bike was picked up by a great tow truck guy, who treated it like his own. We went back to Roanoke to a large Yamaha shop. They replaced the tire with a D404 and made the turn signals work again. 6 hours later I was back on the road. The weather was very windy so I stopped for the night in Harrisonburg. I made it into Penn Yan, Ny by 6pm Wednesday. I had a great visit with my Mom & Brother and headed into NJ on Sat to visit with HS freinds. I stopped on the way at OCC and checked out their bikes in the showroom. I headed to Charlotte on Sunday to stay with my Sister-in-law. I got stuck in a 45 minute backup for a car crash on I-85 in SC in front of the BMW factory. Made me realize how lucky I really was. Now I have to see what my insurance adjuster will do when they look at the bike. Of course I'm already looking for parts. The shop in Va said I should get a new rear wheel, but it rode fine for 1600 miles so far. The rest of the parts I should be able to replace myself. Pics are in my profile.
