GigaWhiskey Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 Got my order of carb boots and o-rings in from MiCarl. I was wanting to know if there are any tidbits I should know before putting them on. -Like should i kind of hurry due to the oil that comes out of one of the bolt holes. -Should I cover the o-rings with a little oil. -Should I just use the o-rings dry. -Should I use a sealer in addition to the o-rings. -What is the torque on the bolts? -Anything else? I will prolly do this tomorrow because the wife and kids have m going to Disney on Ice today. Thanks, Rick
Marcarl Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 Just make sure that everything is clean when it goes together. There is no liquids to worry about unless you go deeper than you need to. A little WD40 or such helps things slide together, but cleanliness is holiness. And wait til you have the carbs seated before you go tightening up the boots, they are directionally challenged so need to twist in their sockets a little from time to time as they go together.
Squeeze Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 The silver colored Bolts go on the outer Edges of the Manifold Set.
GeorgeS Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 As long as your working in there, you might want to Double check the Intake Manifold, Seal, where the Intake Manifolds mount to the Heads. O-Rings there also, but sometimes they leak also. ( Even with New O-Rings ) I use Sealant here also.
GigaWhiskey Posted March 27, 2010 Author Posted March 27, 2010 Kewl, thanks y'all. So, is it normal or not OK to see engine oil coming from the top bolt of the boot? I have some oil coming out of those with the bolts out.

Squeeze Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 And to answer your Question in the first Post. I always use Motor Silicone or Sealer on the O-Rings even if you put new O-Rings in. Doesn't hurt anything.
MiCarl Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 I like to lube them just to make sure they can move across the surface to seal well. Usually I use a little spritz of soapy water. If you're going to wait to tighten them you might do better with some silicone lubricant because the soap water will dry pretty quickly. A little soapy water will help the carburetors slide into them too. You just want to dampen them, not fill the engine with suds.
6m459 Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 Hi, I soaked my carb boots in hot tap water for 10 or 12 minutes to warm them up, so that they'd be nice and pliable before I installed them. Worked well for me. Not recommended method: On a previous bike I used a toaster oven to warm them a bit. This didn't work well as surfaces close to the heating elements got more heat than they needed and burned a bit. Hope this helps, Brian H.
