What do I do now ?

Could someone please help me with a problem I have found myself in. I have lost the key for my luggage ( trunk and saddlebags) for my 2001 RSV. How dow I get a new key or can a locksmith make one using the lock off the bike. Please help.

On my 01, inside the saddlebag lid (under the plastic cover mechanism that covers the latching stuff - on the lid) there is a key code that [i presume] goes with the bag locks. You could try that with a local locksmith that cuts keys to manufacture codes.

 

I suspect that if you take the lock out, you could take it into a locksmith and they probably could cut you a key from that, but I am no locksmith so I'll pipe down.

 

We do have a resident locksmith here, maybe he'll chime in with some ideas

Is your luggage key different from your ignition key? On my RSV they are all the same.

If he has had his ignition switch replaced, they are most likely different, unless he had a locksmith re-key the ignition. Mine are different also.

Take the vin number to a dealer and see if they can cut a key...

If they are different, Maybe the locksmith could re-key the luggage to match the ignition. If not, once you get a key for the luggage, cut another key with the ignition on one side and the luggage on the other. Both my bikes have different locks and with a key cut that way, I only have to carry one key, to work either lock set.

I did not realize that the ignition key was the same as the trunk. The original trunk key was much shorter than the ignition key. I just put the key in the saddlebag and trunk and it works perfectly. If what I have been told is true you can take the gas cap off, turn the gas cap upside down, there are some numbers under the lid. I have been told you can make a key from those numbers. I have never tried it but write down those numbers and put it in a safe place like your wallet and if you loose your keys you should be able to go to Yamaha and have a key made. At least that is what I've been told.

The helmet lock is the easiest to remove.Take it to a locksmith and have a key made.Don't ask how I know this.

the numbers are on the underside of the key hole cover for the gas cap

unscrew your mirror from the stem, lay it on the gas tank and swing the fuel cap lock cover to the open position to see the numbers in the mirror.

Well, you might think about taking the key out of the ignition and using it?

 

In all seriousness, I'll assume you have had the ignition replaced, so that key is different. But now that you have a key problems, just remove one of the other locks and take it with the ignition key to a locksmith and have them re-key the lock. Assuming that works, then take the other two locks in and have them done the same way.

I'd get that ignition key duped. Lose that one and you're in deep doo-doo.....

Yup, go to a locksmith and get 2 or 3 copies of the ignition key made. Hide one on the bike (zip tie to underside of trunk, electrical tape wrap on the frame, etc.).

 

Just don't put the extra key in one of the saddle bags.

My ignition key also opens all bags
