rumboogy Posted March 20, 2010 #1 Posted March 20, 2010 I had my bike lowered with lowering links which makes my bike much easier to move around when I'm just rolling it around in parking lots..or even the garage. Anyway, although the kickstand works OK as it is now...ANY type of sloping surface (even the slightest slope) makes it feel like the bike is sitting straight up, so I want to SHORTEN my kickstand. So I bought a used kickstand on eBay and got it today. I thought my neighbor could fix this for me, but he says he can't weld cast iron...so now I am looking for someone to shorten the kickstand for me (preferably someone that has done this before). I would want a finished look and will pay for the job. I did look in the classifieds, but couldn't any appropriate section (maybe "wanted to buy"), but decided I would post here first. Anyone interested? Wally
Jerry W Posted March 20, 2010 #2 Posted March 20, 2010 Wally, I have a buddy who can shorten the stand. He charges $50 for his labor. I think I have a spare kick stand around somewhere if you want me to see about having him work it over.
skydoc_17 Posted March 20, 2010 #3 Posted March 20, 2010 Hey Guys, Just an FYI, the kick stand IS NOT Cast Iron. It is STEEL that has been poured into a mold, to take the shape of a kick stand. The "fix" would be to cut the foot off, remove a section of the "stem" and weld the foot back on. Earl
Squeeze Posted March 20, 2010 #4 Posted March 20, 2010 I've shortened around 20 Kick Stands off Vmaxxes in the last Years. Used a MIG Welder and i haven't had any Problem since. I agree, they look like cast Iron, but they're certainly not. Look at the Size, Iron, casted or forged wouldn't hold up to the Forces applied by our heavy Bikes leaning over, sometimes on a heavy lean Angle and/or Riders let their Passengers mount while the Bike is on the Kick Stand ....
Squidley Posted March 21, 2010 #5 Posted March 21, 2010 Wally, This is just me and if I was going to do it, I would cut the foot off and put a new base piece on it. I wouldn't leave any shaft attached to the foot and try to reweld the shaft. These are super heavy and the weld would have to be spot on and pefect to be as strong as the original. With installing a new base on the shaft, and actually shortening the actual shaft portion you'll keep the integity of that casting. Weld on a bigger foot and you wont have any worries of the shaft collapsing
cb1313 Posted March 21, 2010 #6 Posted March 21, 2010 Cb up in Mountain home, arkansas. I lowered my bike over the winter and cut off my kickstand yesterday. I purchased a Kaw. Versys 2 weeks ago and lowered it too. I found a foot kit at www.motorwrek.com. Look under Versys , I purchased both kits and tried the large foot on the Venture but it did not really work, so I put the one piece foot on the Venture. It works but some may not like the small foot. I cut the stand with a recipcating saw, no problems. Cb

Wally OK DISREGARD the link I posted...it is not the correct one either. CB...could you post the link again. Thanks,. Edited March 21, 2010 by rumboogy

Does he cut off the foot and then weld another on? $50 is not a problem and I also have a replacement for your kickstand if need be. I do think the safest fix for this would be to remove the material near the foot and then replace the foot. Let me know. Wally
Jerry W Posted March 21, 2010 #9 Posted March 21, 2010 The way we shortened mine and another one we did was to cut out a section at the foot then we drilled and threaded the remaining pieces and put them back together using a piece of allthread. We then welded it back together using stainless steel rod, then dressed and buffed the weld with a dremel. We felt like this would make take the stand back to being a solid piece as we could come up with. I think if you cut it out above the wire loop you not only run a risk of the look hitting the floorboard, there would be a lot more stress on the splice.
rumboogy Posted March 21, 2010 Author #10 Posted March 21, 2010 So what's the next step Jerry. I am interested. Like I said, I have an extra kickstand I can send or exchange. Wally
Jerry W Posted March 22, 2010 #11 Posted March 22, 2010 I will get with my buddy and see when he can get to it, he is working 12 hour daylights right now. He works shift work at a refinery.
bubman15 Posted March 22, 2010 #12 Posted March 22, 2010 I also just lowered mine and looking for someone to redo the kickstand. Even on level ground I don't trust it very well. Let me know if someone is intested and I can purchase a new one and send it out. Thanks Jim Whitehair
emtdouggood Posted March 22, 2010 #13 Posted March 22, 2010 tell your neighbor if he uses nicad rod you can weld cast. he might want to practice first.I use too do fab work and that is what we used.
