mmaleney Posted March 12, 2010 #1 Posted March 12, 2010 I picked up an 83 venture needing lots of work, I put 87 carbs on so do I have to change the 83 CDI to a newer type work with the 87 carbs, 83 carbs are junk, bike is not on the road as yet, thanks.
Yammer Dan Posted March 12, 2010 #2 Posted March 12, 2010 NO. Vacum for boost hooks up different. As long as you find hoohup for it.
mmaleney Posted March 14, 2010 Author #3 Posted March 14, 2010 So is my answer is no the 83 CDI will not work with the 87 carbs or no I do not need to change the 83 CDI.
Snaggletooth Posted March 14, 2010 #4 Posted March 14, 2010 What Dan meant was the CDI off the '83 will work fine with the '87 carbs. The trick is the '83 CDI (26H) has a different boost setting on it that '84 thru '89 (41R). The vac line from the sensor will hook up at a different port on the carbs is the only change. Now if I remeber right there was a thread on that and where the line could be tied into. But for now D'oh! I can't remember. Somebody will jump in here shortly I'm sure.
skydoc_17 Posted March 14, 2010 #5 Posted March 14, 2010 Dan and Mike are correct, you will need the MKII Boost Sensor (41R) the hose will connect to the port (this is the port where you would connect the line for a Carb. Sync) on the Carb. boot on the left front Carb. (cylinder#2) The hose that goes to the Boost Sensor has a "one way" air valve in it so when you get the MKII boost sensor, get the hose as well. Earl
dingy Posted March 14, 2010 #6 Posted March 14, 2010 Here is a thread discussing the vacuum line to the pressure sensor. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=43906 Below is a picture of where it hooks up to the 83 carb. First is with hose on. Second one, I removed hose. This port is not on the 84 & up carbs, but the boss is still there in the casting. You could drill the carb out and epoxy in a hose barb for the hookup. Gary
