SilvrT Posted March 10, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 10, 2010 On both my '85 and '87 I got over 40 mpg consistently. Not sure what I get on the '06 but it is close. Dunno how far a guy should expect to go on a tank of gas .... I never gauge it that way ... I always get gas or start looking for it when the tank shows about 3/8 . emtdouggood Posted March 10, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 10, 2010 I checked my 83 this weekend and got 32 mpg and alot of that was in town riding. My sr250 would get 50 mpg.
GigaWhiskey Posted March 10, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 10, 2010 I think there is a thread floating around about why we don't take our bikes to the shop and we will work on them ourselves. Last I checked mine was about 42mpg.

GigaWhiskey Posted March 10, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 10, 2010 You can buy the sync tool for about $100. That is cheaper than them and there are instructions all over the site and a ton of people to help out on here. Hopefully someone will have one at my MX Day on may 15th - a 30 minute drive from you. It would be foolish to pay this guy $130+ to sync the carbs. The 4 channel vacuum gauge only costs about $100 and it takes about 15 minutes. Put out a thread for help with a carb sync in the DFW area and I am sure you will get plenty of help. It may ultimately cost you a 6 pack or so, but certainly less than $130. And you know it would be done right. RR

Now that's funny. Interestingly enough I get 50-60 mpg on my 78 GS750 - that's 750 ccs. My wing would do between 45 and 50 depending on weather and how I rode (1100 CC). Personally, I wouldn't go back to that shop...
barend Posted March 10, 2010 Share #9 Posted March 10, 2010 I get better mileage in town, around 40-ish and blowing down the interstate might drop it down to upper 30's. Now that I have the sidecar I'm getting mid thirties unless I shagg ass on the interstate only. I used to fill up at about 150 miles, now i'm looking at about 120. If the tech is right about the 20mpg, I'd like to know what you've been running on those last 40 miles, I want some of that schtuff
Aimhigh Posted March 10, 2010 Share #10 Posted March 10, 2010 My '07 RSV averages 36-39 mpg. My Suzuki GZ-250 got around 65 mpg. Not sure where this guy is from, but I would like to know so that I can stay far away from it.

Guest scarylarry Posted March 10, 2010 Share #13 Posted March 10, 2010 Sync carbs is easy, I do mine in about 20 mins. and that was the first time like reading a blood pressure gauge, very simple and easy.. About 30 mins. of reading here and u are set, my stealer wanted 130.00 gauge is 100.00 and you are set for life on with your own... I get around 38-40 mpg on my

Thought you were in Natchez? I don't have the "fancy-smancy" carb tune, but if you wanna ride up to my place this weekend, we can get you in the middle of the ballpark, with my vacuum gauges. I think Squeeze says there is a little difference between the 1st Gen and 2nd Gen procedures, but no reason we can't do it.
Venturous Randy Posted March 10, 2010 Share #15 Posted March 10, 2010 Before I did the needle mod, 42 mpg was a good day. Now, if I am running in the 40 to 60mph range, even two up, it is not uncommon to get 47 and I have done that several times. Guy sounds like an idiot to me. bongobobny Posted March 10, 2010 Share #18 Posted March 10, 2010 Tell the fool that we all get around 40 MPG give or take a few depending on driving style and how well tuned, and that includes 2nd gens as well!! Don't know where that guy got his info because I know a lot of mid sized bikes, 500-750cc that get mileage in the 50s...
McBrush Posted March 10, 2010 Share #19 Posted March 10, 2010 My 2nd gen '04 gets over 40MPG consistently. My 1100 Virago got 45 on 3 different trips last year. It's a shame these shops no longer have experienced 'bike' mechanics.
SilvrT Posted March 10, 2010 Share #20 Posted March 10, 2010 If you go to a Yamaha (or Kawasaki or Suzuki, etc) dealer and the majority of product on display revolves around off-road bikes, crotch rockets, ATV's and/or PWC's .... that's a good indication they won't know much about an RSV .. Snaggletooth Posted March 11, 2010 Share #21 Posted March 11, 2010 Had a young service tech at a local shop tell me last year that my bike didn't sound right for a V-twin. I reached down and pulled off two plug wires and restarted the bike and asked.."How's that?" Kid was stunned......running with no plug wires!! This is why I do my own work. And I get at least 35 mpg around town and 40+ on the highway.
warthogcrewchief Posted March 11, 2010 Share #22 Posted March 11, 2010 I haven't gotten a good mileage calculation on my bike yet, but I can tell you about my last bike - an '06 HD low rider, 1450 cc... got 40 to 45 mpg.
YamaDuck Posted March 11, 2010 Share #23 Posted March 11, 2010 I don't think I would take my motorcycle to a mechanic that could make a statement like that. I don't know of anyone who has a cruiser 900cc or larger that isn't getting 30mpg or better and most are 35mpg or better.
eusa1 Posted March 11, 2010 Share #24 Posted March 11, 2010 i put an average of 25000 miles a year on my venture, and i run the bajeesus out of it most of the time, and often crowd the tripple numbers on the ole speedo, and the poorest mpg i have ever gotten was 31mpg, i get as much as 45 mpg when doing the patriot escort rides. heres what you need.......member needs carb sync. please advise if you would help sync his carbs??? please reply on this thread! thank you...breezelasbre73 see if that helps you out? mike:whistling:

Trip last year to the international rally I averaged 40-43 mpg and that was 2 up pulling a trailer that weighed about 300 lbs. Wouldn't go to that dealer again.
