tday1 Posted March 10, 2010 #1 Posted March 10, 2010 I just bought a 2000 RSV that has been sitting for a couple of years due to the owner was going to fix cosmetic damage to the trunk and bags but never got to it and put it on craigslist and ebay. He has been cranking it and running about once a month but not driving it so we both thought that cleaning the tank and running some Seafoam through it would get it back on the road. Well it will get through 1st and 2nd okay but after that it loads up and won't run. I don't think this is a carb problem since it will idle and rev fine through 1st and 2nd so does anyone know if this is an electircal problem or will I have to take off the carbs and go through them ? Thanks for the help, Tim
Guest human4m Posted March 10, 2010 #2 Posted March 10, 2010 This particular subject is in threads everywhere on the forums, and after spending several hours reading through them when I had carb issues, this is what it boiled down to: Check your fuel filter Change Gas Check Plugs See if you're getting fuel in all the carbs by opening the drain screw. With good gas, Seafoam in the tank, good plugs and a fresh fuel filter, go run the crap out of it. There is also something to check in the mouth of the carbs, but honestly, that's farther than I've had to go. I even read a souple places where people suggested running straight seafoam into the carbs so it could sit in the carb bowls and clear up any gunk. After I got mine out of the shop, the guy said, "Ya' know if you had just run some SeaFoam through it, you would have cleared up the problem on your own." Oops. I'm sure more will chime in soon! Oh, I meant to ask, I know a couple of Days- Are you related to any of the Days in Richlands? (Jim, Nat)
tday1 Posted March 12, 2010 Author #3 Posted March 12, 2010 Thanks for your help but after changing filter and plugs plus running it with seafoam it still doesn't run cleanly. And now I have to wait out the weather to try to clear it out hard. The bike will rev perfectly sitting still in nuetral or clutch engaged so I guess I need to pull the carbs and go through them to see if the problem is there. I am not related to the Day's you asked about. Thanks again for your help, Tim
Eck Posted March 12, 2010 #4 Posted March 12, 2010 Sounds like the floats are stuck -or sticking. Revving it up takes a "shot" or two of gas but when under a load (when riding), it requires a lot more gas and it requires it 'continually". If your carbs are stuck, in a certain position, or sticking and not "floating freely" they may not be letting the required fuel in fast enough and this makes you run the carbs dry quickly and that is why I feel it wont run when riding it. If the carbs are working freely and properly, then you may have a fuel hole clogged which wont let fuel in on the inlet side of the carbs or the outlet side where the fuel travels from the carb bowels to the outlet tube. I do not feel it is anything electrical from what you have explained so far...
Cougar Posted March 12, 2010 #5 Posted March 12, 2010 (edited) Every winter except for this one I always used to go out and start it up turns out in doing so and doing that for 5 months all it does is foul the plugs real bad. she will still start, but run like poop until I install new one's. another think if this bike sat that long and with not a full tank. LOOK inside the tank with a flashlight to see if rust has started. I had to etch my whole tank about 4 years ago. been great ever since. Take a look at my cross section in this thread of my filter after I got my bike, http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=524 keep us posted on how thing went for you. I use sea-foam on a regular basis these days , but no amounts of sea-foam would have help my problem I had. Jeff Edited March 12, 2010 by Cougar
