O.K. guys.

I know a whole lot about the mechanicals of my 88 VR, but not much about the body, plastic, chrome, etc.

Can all years of the 1st gens use the same trunk luggage rack?

What I'm asking is if the 1200 and 1300 VRs had the same size and shape tail trunks?

O.K. Is there anywhere to buy a new, good quality (maybe even N.O.S.) trunk rack for a VR these days?

Thanks.

Yeah. I know about that cracking stuff. Thanks.

I usually have some sort of rear rack on my bikes because I'm always riding one of my bikes and never know when I will need to strap something (hopefully not too heavy) back there. Even my SR500 has a rear rack.

I had a rack on by '84 when I bought it that was small, about a foot wide. I wanted a stock rack and finally found a NOS on the Bay.

I was concerned about the cracking also as I wanted to run with a trunk bag also. I made a set of brace supports for the inside of the trunk to help spread the weight and used some heavier bib washers on the outside. Kind of raw looking so I ended up covering the inside of the trunk with trunk liner.

Feels solid and no flexing.

I don't know about the MKII trunks but some GW racks are supposed to fit well.

There are two types that I know of, there is a rectengular one with a "raised lip" on the back side which has what I would call a more utilitarian look and there is a slightly smaller one without the "lip" but it has a more stylish look. I have the latter on my '83 Royale and I have the other that I can sell you but have to pull it off a trunk from a standard. Bolt patterns are not the same.

The VentureLine MKI and MKII luggage racks are different as the trunks are different. There may even be a different configuration for the '85?? The rack needs to clear the backrest hinge cover on the MKII. So the front of the rack is sloped up. If someone hasn't already done it by this afternoon I'll go out and take a pick of both. BTW the VentureLine racks have a medalion with either 1200 or 1300 in the center of the rack. I've never seen an aftermarket rack that looked good when installed.

I've seen the 1300 Venture medallions and like they way those look. Don't know if I'll find a clean Yamaha rack though.

Pictures would be nice so I can compare.

I appreciate the assistance and thanks for the suggestions.

Looks like you did a great job with the bracing and the cosmetics. If I find a rack, I'll have to do that too.

Thanks for the info.

The first pic is the rack I took off. You can see why I wanted to change it. Then a few shots of the Venturline rack for the MKI.

Keep an eye on eBay. They show up pretty often. Search "motorcyle trunk rack". That's how I found mine.

My 85 has the rack in the second pic.

I am starting to believe, even though the Brownie's are the fastest color, they are the red headed step child of the whole series of the 1st gen.

The rack on the back of my bike isn't exactly "aftermarket" but it was made for an 1800 Goldwing. I think you can kind of see it in these pictures. Of course, it's hard to get a picture of a First Gen!!! :witch_brew:

I also included a pic before I added it.

Ok, I said I'd do it... just took me a while longer than anticipated.... :) The first two pics are of an V-Line 1200 MKI rack and the second is of a V-Line 1300 MKII rack.

Thanks Condor.

It took me a few days to get back on the forum.

Those are some great photos and show me the differences between the 1200 and 1300.

What's the trim piece above the trunk latch on the 1300? My '88 doesn't have that, but it sure looks cool!

I think it became available thru VentureLine in '92 or '93. I've never seen another so I can think it was available for very long. The brochure I posted doesn't show it and it was printed in '90.

Did you make those wide flat strips under the legs or did you buy them somewhere?

Got them from our local Stainless manufacturer. Don't know the tickness, but I would guess about 18 gauge. Cost me a bag of pepperettes. Was just scrap to them more or less. If you want some, let me know and I see what it costs.
