I get no respect! because I don't ride a HD, anyone else get the sme feeling at times?

 

 

 

The above reason is the first reason I swore I would never own a Harley! Now that I own my RSV it has become more than that. I ride with several friends that own Harleys, and while their bikes are very nice. They seem to spend a fortune on maintenance. They are fair weather riders only, any chance of a sprinkle and forget it. They would rather trailer their bikes than ride them, so they can keep the miles down and avoid costly repairs. My money is better spent on accessories WHEN AND IF I decide to do them. Plus all the guys I ride with are constantly eyeballing MY bike, and complementing me in how nice it is. YEA I'VE GOT ABOUT 1/3 THE COST OF THEIR BIKES INTO MY BIKE, INCLUDING THE COST OF MINE........... WITH HAVING PUT ALL THE ACCESSORIES AND NICE SPARKLY PAINT JOB. OH YEA DID I MENTION ITS FASTER!!!! THE ONLY THING I WOULD TRADE IS THE STEREO AND TAPE DECK. BUT THAT WAS FIXED WITH A HEADSET AND MP3 PLAYER. I do like all bikes, just not the attitude and maintenance that goes with some of them. Not all Harley riders are like that either, but i'd rather not be put in the category of the one's who are JUST because of the KIND of bike I CHOOSE to ride!

I should have clarified "bikes". Metric bikes are pretty much totally made in Asia but not my brand new 10 vehicle (auto or bike). And, you're right, I use to walk everywhere when I was in Nam, have never been butt naked nor starving. I graduated up to replacing my combat boots with civie shoes and buy whatever the heck I want; just like you I assume. If anyone has earned that, I have. Have a good one.

In answer to being open on Sundays?????? maybe it's that the metric dealers don't need to be open because everybody's out riding and wouldn't come in anyways, I mean if you enjoy the riding, why stop???

Seriously though, I guess HD's are ok, though it seems to me they work very hard sellling an "image" rather than a motorcycle. (Any has anybody ridden one of them with the rear cylinder cut out at idle? What's with that?? TERRIBLE heat pumps!!). Seems to me there are two types of folks, motorcyclists and "bikers". (And it has NOTHING to do with brand of machines!) Motorcyclists like to ride their bikes (whatever brand), while "bikers" like to dress up like pirates, stop by the bar and talk about how cool they are. Just my 2 cents...

This thread has come up at an interesting moment for me. I purchased a 2000 RSV in December 2009. It had 14,000 miles and was in great condition. I've put 3,000 miles on the bike since, paid out $1,000+ for new rear tire and 16,000 mile maintenance at a dealer.

 

I bought a Yamaha because I have owned three others and they were always low maintenance, highly reliable, and great to ride. I bought an RSV because I wanted a dresser to ride long and far. I bought used because I did not want to invest 15-20K in any motorcycle until I knew I would keep it and ride it as I intended.

 

I did not seriously consider a Harley because I have never thought Harleys to be a good value - too much hype and marketing. As for not being part of the pack and not getting waved at out on the road - that sounds like a feature rather a bug. When I started riding 40 years ago it was all about being a rebel and being different. Although, I admit to being a pretty conservative, law-abiding citizen, I still don't want to be part of a herd. Buying American? I paid $3.00 extra for my Purple Heart Plate - made in Huntsville, Texas, USA.

 

Now the problem. After two months of fairly easy riding and fairly expensive maintenance - I have a slipping clutch and just discovered a small puddle of oil under my rear shock. I had already ordered the clutch upgrade and that didn't seem like too big a deal and from what has been said on this site, a one time fix. The shock replacement is a big deal (for me)and sounds like a regular, uncorrected, recurring problem.

 

I really have enjoyed riding the bike. I have spent a lot of time on Hill Country back roads. I like the handling. It is very comfortable. I'm 5' 11" the bike with stock everything fits me as well as any bike I've ridden. It does make a lot of funny noises, whining, whistling engine, gear and road noise just as decribed by others on this site. I don't really mind the noises - but don't really like it either. As for slow speed handling, It's a big heavy dresser and handles that may. I took a skilled rdier course with 11 other riders on Harleys. The RSV handled the course as well as the other bikes.

 

So bottom line is I like riding the bike but it does not seem to have that Yamaha quality and reliability I was expecting. I'm now wondering if there is better value in a goldwing or beemer.

BTW is there is a permanent fix for the shock issue I'd really like to hear it.

 

If its any consolation I have ridden my Venture a lot farther on the second shock than I did on the first and haven't had any more problems. Probably 50,000 miles on this one.

Thanks for your service MasterGuns. I would also like to know what motorcycle and what POV you drive that is totally made in the US. Harleys are mostly made in the US but do fave some foreign electronics parts and I'm not aware of any US auto maker that doesn't get a lot of there electrical components from other countries. My wifes Toyota is probably more American than mosy American cars and trucks. Japanese bikes are refered to as Metrics because of there bolt size they use. American auto's have been made with metric bolts for years. The world is a different place now. I understand how and why people say buy American but the reality is it is a globel economy and there is just not a such thing anymore. My wifes Toyota is built in the US buy Americans, my watch is Japanese, my jeans are assembled in Mexico, my fruit is from Chile, the list goes on and on. I do greatly appreciate your service to your country and you have earned the privilege to walk in your civies even though the civies are made in another country.

the only American car manufacturer that didn't that any BO bailout money. My computer

is custom made by Maverick Computers in Weatherford, Texas by Texans. And I use it

to install various MAPS in to my HD's fuel regulater, also manufactured in the U.S.

It's called a Power Commander. No rice here.

I test rode one, the most uncomfortable bike I've ever been on, including my old 250 motocross racing bike.

I really wanted to like it, and I actually love the engine.

I've always liked the looks of a fat boy and the v-rods, but they are 300 mile bikes at best. Then again so is my 650 Vstar.

ford did not take the bail out money because of the majority of their production is in brazil, and the mustung is a fine horse, but is far from a thoroughbred!!

with electronics from japan, alternator from mexico, interior parts from taiwan, and dont get me started on what comes from FRANCE!..... but on a lighter note.. it is purdy..for a ford..eeuww.

call your h/d dealer and ask him where your front forks come from?? if he knows, he will lie to you, bet he says ...uumm? oldmillwalkeee?

 

pull the cover off yer texan computer, and if you can read the writing on 1 tenth of the parts inside, i will have you order dinner the next time we go to fung mings oriental cuisine.. gaaalee gomer, i shore wish ya woulda stayed on the porch with

actually, toyota and nissan are pretty much neck and neck for american assemblage/content. here's some numbers to chew on. some of these are supprising, some of them are expected (like your mustang isat least 70% american)

Your counter arguement can be used for any manufacturing today and is old and wornout. I work for one of the largest international shipping companies in the world (steamship) and know first hand what is imported and what is not. I see our ships leave US ports half full and arrive back without one empty container space at all. And in my opinion where this country stands today is just the beginning. But nevertheless, Ford, for whatever reason didn't take any of "your" money and that should be worth something to you. Go ahead and buy a Bamarolet, Bamachrylser. I'll stick with Ford and HD even though each has a portion of their parts manufactured overseas. If one wanted to purchase a totally made American product, they would most likely be in the market for, hummm, nothing comes to mind. Oh by the way, did I mention my really fun bike is an 86 VR. The only reason I have it is to show all my HD friends just how slow their stuff is. Then I return on my HD. Fun s&*^ to do. You should try it. But you know what, after serving Uncle Sam for over 30 years, fighting in two wars, deploying to Operation Restore Hope, and countless other excursions to every fillthy corner of this earth, I will do whatever it takes to standup for this country even if all I can do is purchase mostly American products, and VOTE these morons out of office. My wife drives a Nissan Altima 3.5SR. Good car; almost!

 

BTW, I really don't mind silly crap being sent my way, I only have problems with rounds.

By golly, that is a great idea. I'm am now in the hunt for Christine; you know the Chrysler in the movie that repaired itself. Great looking "big" car; love those fins.. Behind it, I'd like to have in tow a panhead with a Honda 160 strapped on the rear of the panhead as a spare. In those days, there wasn't any small American m/c so a Honda 160 will have to suffice.

Great idea and I just got rid of a 1966 Ford Thunderbird Landou. The problem with old cars is you need to drive them everyday or something else quits working. And also every time you crank her up you have to put in ear plugs so you can't hear the wife yelling turn that thin off your smelling up the house. Those old cars without smog devices really do smell when they are running but boy what nice cars.
