83 VR front head off due to low compression cyl#2

head gasket in 3 pieces (3 layers of thin steel), is this correct-are these 3 layers supposed to be pressed together into 1 thick gasket, or has a previous owner stacked multiple gaskets for some reason.

do have blowby signs on the gaskets, if 3 layers stacked, reason may have been to take up valve slack lost during head mill??

any way to measure correct mill height to verify if done

if in fact head milled, then what...may be looking for new head:doh:

any thoughts appreaciated

As Squeeze said, 3 piece is fine.

I have the heads of my 88 right now, and the old gaskets are 3 piece.

My 97 Vmax heads came with the old gaskets, they are 3 piece.

feel better knowing 3 piece is normal, guess need to be ordering some parts, probably should replace gaskets on rear head at same time, broke water joint #17 between cylinders, it rotated, but would not slide out=any tricks for removal on the rear head

Mine did same thing on the 1300 heads.

I took a heavy piece of welding rod and tapped the outboard piece out. Don't tap into metal or it may leak, just tap on joint pipe.

Then took piece of welding rod and bent short hook on end and went thru out board hole and hooked indoard piece of joint pipe. Was able to get out on both stock heads. Don't need stock heads now, but at time I did.
