Cold called by a dealer

Tejas Motorsports, a local Yamaha dealer, just called me and offered me $1000 for my '06 RSTD. They said they were experiencing great demand for used bikes, and wanted mine. I think what they were saying is that they were offering $1000 over the bluebook or trade-in value. I wasn't selling, so I didn't seek much clarification.

When I said no thank you, I was offered a free fuel treatment on my next service. Thanks but....

The last question was whether I would be buying a new bike in the next 12 months. No.

Seems pretty aggressive to cold call past customers like this. (They've mounted tires for me.)

Would any of you take that offer?

Personally, I'd look at it as a phone call to "get our money grubbing hands on your baby so we can over charge you for some bogus problem that we can quickly create while you're not looking." But maybe thats just the Scorpio in me coming out.

But it doesn't sound like these guys are looking to give away anything for free.

I have a 1997 RSTC, and if they had offered me $5k for mine, I woulda jumped on it. Sadly, all of the custom paint & chrome on mine doesn't make it worth more!

But you enjoy riding it don't you? Custom bikes are never what they cost but that doesn't stop riders from spending their money. I have a buddy who bought a Susuki M109 for a hot rod. Now with custom paint, exhausts, raked front fork, engine mods and chrome everything including wheels it is worth less than a stock M 109. And when he enters it into bike shows he only gets "honorable mention" because someone else was more stupid and spent more money. Go figure!

He sounds desperate to make any kind of sale. Nothing is moving anywhere except for used inventory. I just came from a local dealer(reputable) and he says things have never been this bad in the thirty years he's been in the business.

The dealer guy I know says lack of credit is killing sales.
