Im putting together a custom bike from my 86, does anyone know if the bar that runs from the front engine mount back is neccessary? seems like it is there only to hold the side covers down at the bottom. parts catalouge calls it a down tube.

thanks for any input

This question came up once before, and I think Squeeze confirmed it added to the overall integrity of the frame.. I used to have a great pic of a VR chopper, but I lost it in the HD crash a few months ago. I think?? it ran without the stringers.

Contact RandyA as I think he removed them when he went to the bikini side covers on his '83. Also too if you go with solid motor mounts that will stiffen up the entire frame.

Hey josh, as I responded in your PM, I did run the bike for a while without the bars and then painted the bars silver and put them back on. I was feeling some flexing and that did help. I do hope to put solid motor mounts in and than I feel it would be ok without the bars. I will try to post a picture with the bars off. The way I mounted my side panels was I had some spare bars and cut them off just after the connection point and just used one end of the bar to hold the panels on.

I'd fabricate something like the chrome Parts my 1Gen max has ...

Really helps, even if the upper End is only clamped to the Frame, the lower End is Bolted to the Frame Cross Members.

And do the solid Motor Mounts too !!

Yah!! It does add to the rigidity of the entire frame system but it can be eliminated wqithout any serious consequences unless you are a performance driver that pushes the envelope...
