RedRaptor22 Posted February 19, 2010 #1 Posted February 19, 2010 I was gifted a 99 venture royale a few weeks ago by my wifes uncle and intended to just get it running and titled for two up riding since the Sv is'nt physically big enough to do it comfortably, but since I lost my job I have'nt the funds to do so and I really prefer minimalistic bikes I was thinking about stripping it naked to fund the repairs. So here are my questions, are the guages sealed well enough on the back side to use mounted to bars rather than buying a whole new tank and guages from a tour deluxe? Also has anyone removed the big huge air cleaners and radiator shrouds without the tank and airbox from a tour deluxe? Has anyone tried tucking some pod filters inside the steering head covers? I'm hoping to be able to fund this conversion by selling the parts already on the bike since I currently have no income, Thats what I did when I went naked and upgraded to a gsxr front end on the SV, can it be done cleanly with the venture?
tazmocycle Posted February 19, 2010 #2 Posted February 19, 2010 need to check your bike out or post pics of it. a 99 would be a royal star venture. 83-93 was venture royale. there's a lot of differances between the 2. lot of differances in prices too.
RedRaptor22 Posted February 19, 2010 Author #3 Posted February 19, 2010 Ok then it's a royal star venture, I don't have pics or the bike handy but it's this one right here. http://i49.tinypic.com/dpbat2.jpg It's a bit darker and more purplish in color, complete except for the trunk, basically looking to ditch the fairing, side fairings and air cleaners, and saddlebags. If it does'nt make it go, stop or handle I really don't care for it.
M61A1MECH Posted February 19, 2010 #4 Posted February 19, 2010 Sounds like a waste of time and effort to me, you would like be better off selling it as is or just parting the whole thing out and taking the money, but that is just me.
ahoutzer Posted February 19, 2010 #5 Posted February 19, 2010 You are trying to downgrade a Royal Star Venture to a mid-90's Royal Star, which was less powerful and was discontinued because of that. The power increase came mostly from the increased air flow through those two big air boxes, which you are trying to eliminate. The air boxes need the cowling around them to regulate air flow when the bike is moving, or else so much air will be rammed into the carbs that it will be fuel-starved. I think what you are doing is akin to marrying someone who you don't like, with the intention of changing them to suit you. Don't do it. Sell this bike to someone who will appreciate it.
BigBoyinMS Posted February 19, 2010 #6 Posted February 19, 2010 Lot's of electrical wiring and electronics inside the fairing and lower fairings. To get what your going for it would be easier to swap it for a older Royal Star. I'm sure your could find someone that would love to upgrade to a Venture. http://image.motorcyclistonline.com/f/8847388+w750+st0/122_0310_Best2_46z+1997_Yamaha_Royal_Star+Full_Right_Side_View.jpg
Freebird Posted February 19, 2010 #7 Posted February 19, 2010 I'm not saying that it couldn't be done because folks can do some pretty amazing things when they put their mind to it. There would be a lot of things to consider though. Yes, the airboxes can be removed and replaced with pods. I've seen that done on these bikes before. I don't have any pictures of it but somebody may have. There is a LOT of wiring inside that fairing and in those lowers however. Wiring, cruise control components, much more. I think it will take a lot of work to make it look decent.
Godlover Posted February 19, 2010 #8 Posted February 19, 2010 I would encourage you to find someone with an older Roadstar that might want to move up to a Venture. The Roadstar sounds like the bike you want and the earlier models are priced right. However, before you give up on the Venture - you need to ride it for a month or so - -IMO it is the best bike out there so give it a chance to win you over!!!!
Godlover Posted February 19, 2010 #9 Posted February 19, 2010 Another thought - if you decide to get it up and running you will have a ton of support from this site. There is a wealth of information on this forum and the people here are some of the best in the world. They will go out of their way to help you with your ride and we would love to have you as part of the Venturerider family!
RedRaptor22 Posted February 20, 2010 Author #10 Posted February 20, 2010 I appreciate everyones opinions and sentiment about the bikes but it kind of boils down to a "this is what I have" situation. Even if I were to sell it and get something different I simply still would'nt be happy because for some reason there just is'nt anything built that I would'nt have to go back and do 100 things differently lol. Same reason I bought a fully faired sportbike and stripped it completely naked, it had the makings of something beautiful and raunchy but it was just a bike, not "MY" bike.

I can understand where you are coming from, but the possibilities are greater by changing a Road Star than a Venture. You can easily sell the Venture and buy a Road Star with some money left for your customizing.
RedRaptor22 Posted February 20, 2010 Author #12 Posted February 20, 2010 Also, has anyone ever tried to replace the rims with V-Max rims? doing some research on the parts fiche it looks like the rear is a direct replacement but the front may need a spacer, the bearings are the same part# but the V-Max uses a front speedo drive.
Snaggletooth Posted February 20, 2010 #13 Posted February 20, 2010 Touch base with Squeeze on the V-Max rims. I think he's done something like that.
